“Not to oppose error is to approve it, and not to defend the truth is to suppress it” – Pope St. Felix III

NOTE: In this report I may occasionally use bold print, italics, CAPS, or word underlining for emphasis. These will be my personal emphasis and not that of the source that I am quoting. Any footnote preceded by a number in (parenthesis) is my personal library numbering system.

Ron, Why is the “Our Father” prayer (beginning of Luke 11), as we say it, more like it appears in the King James Bible than in Catholic Bibles (even the Douay-Rheims)? – Mike Coppi

A:
From the Sacramentary (The Roman Missal): “(Priest and people say) – Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. (Priest alone says) – Deliver us Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

(Priest and people say) – For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.”
This would be a doxology which I define a little later in this report.

From the bible <most accurate Catholic edition>: “And it came to pass, that as he was in a certain place praying, when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him: Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And He said to them: When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

From the Protestant bible: “And it came to pass, that as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased one of His disciples said unto Him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And He said unto them, When we pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive everyone that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.”

Note here that many Protestant denominations will not pray the Our Father even though it is in the bible.

“Doxology: a liturgical formula of praise to God.”

“The ‘For thine…’ is technically termed a doxology. In the Bible, we find the practice of concluding prayers with a short, hymn-like verse which exalts the glory of God. In the early Church, the Christians living in the eastern half of the Roman Empire added the doxology ‘for thine…’ to the Gospel text of the Our Father when reciting the prayer at Mass. Evidence of this practice is also found in the ‘Didache’ (Teaching of the Twelve Apostles), a first century manual of morals, worship and doctrine of the Church. Official “Catholic” Bibles including the Vulgate, the Douay-Rheims, the Confraternity Edition, and the New American have never included this doxology.”
This is the difference between the bible and tradition. The bible is translated exactly from Christ’s words, which did not include this doxology.

Tradition, however, as early as the first century Didache, referred to this doxology. Remember our Church teaching that we are as bound by tradition as we are by scripture!

In the opening of this report I quoted the doxology in question from The Roman Missal which is the current approved liturgical book of our Roman Catholic Church for the mandated way in which we say Holy Mass. Canon 846 then prohibits us from changing anything in this liturgical book. Those who wrote the final draft of said Roman Missal did so after much prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. So, as Catholics, we are on solid ground when we recite this doxology at Holy Mass because Holy Church mandates it. Remember what our Lord told Peter, our first pope, “Whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.”
Therefore, the doxology herein is mandated by Holy Church and by God!

Research-wise it is not possible to enter the minds of those who penned our current Sacramentary. So ‘why’ they chose to include this doxology, we may never know. But, since it is part of Holy Mass in the Sacramentary we are on solid ground when we recite it.
