The Siva lingam is the sexual organ of the Hindu deity Siva. The god is said to be present in the lingam. It is therefore very sacred to them and is worshipped by Hindus. In this syncretised temple-church, run by Jesuit
Fr. Menino Gonsalves at Deshanur, near Belagavi, the “Tabernacle” where Jesus is supposed to be reposed is believed by the locals to be a lingam. The Bishop of Belgaum, Derek Fernandes, wearing the typical saffron robes of a Hindu ascetic and sporting a Hindu tilak on his forehead, has used the lingam-tabernacle at his “Mass”. Pictures here*.
