-New Age (alternative therapies, eastern meditations, psycho-spiritual counseling techniques and devices, etc.) promoted by parishes, Catholic laity and religious institutions and individuals in ministry in India, but we have never concerned ourselves with moral issues for fear of sitting in judgement over people.
We have always been receiving information from individuals about predator priests who seduce or sexually exploit women, more so in the recent past. But we have never till now put such information on our web site.
We now feel constrained to publish on our site certain information in the hope that the Church hierarchy concerned will see that justice is done wherever it still remains to be done, and for three reasons:
1. The issue is downplayed and the predator is protected by the very ecclesiastical authorities who should be disciplining him and comforting the survivor/s;
2. The matter has already been reported or is known to the perpetrators’ authorities but with no effect;
3. The news is no secret and is already in the public domain.
02 continues to reproduce more news stories, spread over a period of several years, taking up from where we left off in report 01, in order to provide further evidence that there are many more sexual predators in the Church than we could have imagined, and that the Church authorities have been engaged in the cover-up and protection of priests charged with sex crimes until they can do so no longer.
02 includes news reports not only of sexual predation by clerical wolves in sheep’s clothing (rape, sodomy), but also of Catholic priests who were arrested for the crimes of kidnapping a bishop, and of murder, and there are even priests who murdered another priest, a seminary rector.
The reports are so very numerous that it would be impossible to chronicle them all or even a substantial percentage of what is available on the Internet.
03 details the rape and impregnation of a minor by Fr. Robin (Mathew) Vadakkancherry, the pastor of St. Sebastian’s Church, Kottiyoor, Kerala, and the scandalous bribery and intimidation of the victim’s parents by the priest in paying a huge sum of money — allegedly out of what he received through dubious business deals — to ensure to the victim’s father so that he confessed to the rape, the attempt by the priest to flee India when the story broke, the collusion of local Church authorities to hush and cover up the rape and the pregnancy, the rapist’s “clout” with Church authorities despite earlier complaints of sexual assault and the priest’s being active in a campaign against the sexual abuse of minors. The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) called the case a “generalization” and an “exception”, resorted to blaming the victim and not the perpetrator, and finally blamed the priest’s rape of the child on the effects of “consumerism”.
From reports numbered 01 through 03, one will see that the sexual abuse of nuns, women in general, minor girls and boys by Indian priests is much more common and frequent than one would have imagined, and that the reaction (or lack of any) of the authorities almost always follows the same pattern. In our compilation of these crimes as reported in the public media, history records that the Indian Church only acts against its criminal priests when their crimes become publicly known and cannot be hidden from scrutiny any longer.

In the case of Fr. Joby Kachappilly VC (the present file; see also 05), a retreat centre Director who sexually molested two young girls (among others) over a period of 3 to 4 years, hoping to keep it within the Church and not “wash the church’s dirty linen in public”, and following protocol, we respectfully contacted (over the ‘phone commencing March 18) the rapist’s confreres and his Provincial Superior and again the Superior and his Archbishop (of the Syro-Malabar rite, both by email on April 6), the senior executives and heads of Church bodies and Commissions (including the Presidents of the CBCI and the CBCI) as well as the Apostolic Nuncio to India, going up to April 22, 2017. Finally, after six weeks we received a response on June 7 from the President of the CCBI (Latin rite) asking us which rite the rapist priest belonged to, evidently already knowing fully well the answer and attempting to evade responsibility for the Syro-Malabar rite priest’s crimes! Today, 15 days later, the Cardinal, Oswald Gracias, has not replied to my email response of June 7 to him, and June 18, 2017, marked three months of our futile attempts to bring the Vincentian priest to justice (one of the victims is ready to testify face-to-face against the serial molester-rapist).
Barring one*, all other letters of ours were not answered by the hierarchy and are reproduced in this report.
The predator’s brother priests and Provincial went from tolerant dialogue to hostility to silence. They sort of followed the Fr. Robin Vadakkancherry (03) pattern that we summarised above: intimidation and harassment of the victims on the ‘phone and packing off the priest to Rome (being sent for “studies” to Rome and overseas transfers seems to occur immediately when priests are exposed in India for sex crimes).
We had set some demands that included a council at which the Vincentians, the victim and our team would confront the priest and seek that he be defrocked and laicized. The proposed date was in mid-May. The alternative to that, they were informed, was our approaching the police and the media. That did not deter them from maintaining a deafening silence. We are now in the process of issuing a final email notice to all concerned, the date for a meeting being reset for mid-August, the ignoring of which will constrain us to approach the law, the National Commission for Women (NCW), and the secular media.

The deafening silence of over 500 Vincentian priests, their Provincial Superior and their Superior General, and their retreat centres in response to our emails and several follow-up letters makes them complicit (legally speaking, they are now accessories to the fact) in the serial sexual molestations of Fr. Joby Kachappilly, before God and before man. Some of them were already aware of his crimes.
We have evidence of that as well as of their harassment of the survivors and their families till the time of publishing. They are anxiously attempting to find out what evidence we have, but that will be handed over to the National Commission for Women and the investigating agencies eventually.
Meanwhile, what absolutely shocks us is that the priests of this religious order that is dedicated to the renewal of the Church through exercise of the charisms of the Holy Spirit in their many retreats centres continue to sacrilegiously offer Holy Mass and administer the Sacraments despite their brazen cover-up and protection of the criminal, their lies and denial of the truth, their intimidation of the victim-survivors, and the devious strategies that they are employing to silence us. Their individual and collective sin is great.

This is to confirm my telecon with you a short while earlier concerning Fr. Joby Kachappilly VC from Divine Retreat Ashram, Faridabad, now in Rome.
My initial contacts with Fr. John Puthanpurackal VC and Fr. Joseph Eluvathingal VC were on March 18, 2017. The Vincentian priests were cordial, polite and patient when I revealed my knowledge of the rape of two young girls now aged 24 and 22 between 2013 and December 2015, the repeated molestation of one having occurred in Faridabad and that of the other having been carried out in Bangalore in a hotel room. Fr. Joby booked a Red Line computerised bus ticket from Bangalore to Angamaly under the name of MR. Joby Kachappilly. It is dated December 22, 2015. The evidence is with me. I requested the two priests that their Provincial Fr. Paul Puthuva VC contact me and they noted my phone numbers just as you did today. While I did not hear from them even after calling them both two weeks later on March 31, the young ladies received calls from the priests and now have begun to receive calls from others. They are not answering the calls made by the priests and others. They are, after all, victims of repeated sexual molestation by Fr. Joby and are carrying the effects of severe trauma, psychological damage and loss of innocence as well as trust in the priests of the Congregation. I may add that one girl’s mother is in Delhi and is receiving calls from the priests complaining that her daughter is not responding to their calls and messages. This is a subtle and indirect way of applying pressure on the girl.
Both the priests asked me to contact Fr. Puthuva and Fr. John even gave me Fr. Puthuva’s email id. However, I had hoped that the two priests would convince Fr. Puthuva to call me up. I did not write to Fr. Puthuva hoping that he would call me. It was in vain. Today, Fr. John Puthanpurackal is not answering my calls even though he did so on earlier occasions.
Fr. Joseph Eluvathingal on the other hand now maintains that the girls had not called him up (he had asked me to see that they did so), and without “proof” submitted by them in their phone calls, he says, he could not take the matter further.
The girls say that the routine molestation of young women by Fr. Joby is common knowledge to many priests in the Vincentian congregation. He apparently got into the same situation with women at the retreat centre in Canada which resulted in his being sent to Rome for “higher studies”. This is a classic case of shielding and cover-up by the Vincentian priests of a criminal confrere, a threat to society who should be de-frocked, laicized and put behind bars, and not shielded and protected. One of the girls who he later raped traveled with Fr. Joby on ministry to the Canada retreat centre along with a nun who was apparently very fond of the priest.
The girls’ complaints are being treated as unreliable instead of their being seen as victims/rape survivors. When I talked to Fr. Paul Puthuva today, he turned hostile. He demanded proof, as Fr. Joseph had done. My submission was that the girls would meet with him, not in Aluva as he demanded, but in a neutral venue in Bangalore and that I and two other Catholic young men would be present when one of the girls confronts the rapist priest. I may not have mentioned to Fr. Puthuva on the phone that we want Fr. Joby also to be present there. We are not ready to submit any “proof” to them by email or talk further with them on the phone especially after Fr. Paul Puthuva rudely terminating the call by hanging up on me. Even I sensed a hint of hostility in the trend of Fr. Joseph Eluvathingal’s conversation with me today.
While Fr. John Puthanpurackal has not returned any of my several calls today, he has sent this message immediately to one of the girls: “I would like to talk to you, pls call me wen free.” The time of the message was 1:19 PM possibly just after he received and ignored my calls. Instead of being happy that I went through proper channels by contacting them and not going public, they are now behaving arrogantly and virtually telling me that I could do whatever I want. Earlier the two priests had strongly requested me not to contact you. You were not in India when I called your office on March 31, and Fr. Paul Puthuva was not reachable whenever I tried him as he was in the North-East.
They are all acting/behaving as if it’s the first time that they have heard of these charges against Fr. Joby but I can give you the names of other Vincentian priests who are in the know. I give you one particular case — that of Fr. Vimal Varghese from Kerala, not a Vincentian. When Fr Vimal
reported the matter in December 2016 to two Vincentian batch-mates he met in 2014 at a Self-growth workshop/course in Calicut, they advised him to report the complaint to the Provincial Fr. Paul Puthuva as soon as possible. It was he who provided us with the provincial’s contact number. I am informed that before he could even mention Fr. Joby’s name, they (Vincentian priests) knew who it was and said, “He used to be a good priest, but now he’s become a fraud. He was given a punishment transfer after “disgusting” things he was doing in Canada got reported”.
This was what was told to the molested girls by Fr Vimal.
Fr Vimal spoke to Fr. Paul Puthuva, the Provincial of the congregation, on
4th January 2017, 10am-11am over the telephone
for about an hour and he shared everything. He informed us, “The provincial listened to everything understandingly, but was not at all shocked as he continued to hear accusations of rape & abuse”. Fr. Vimal in fact said, “the Vincentians have been getting many such similar complaints, because of which they’ve been forced & compelled to take the highest degree of action possible and that Fr Joby has been given his very last & final warning, and if another case comes up he will be 100% defrocked & laicised”.
The entire congregation has come to know of all his sexual exploits and he is under strict supervision and watch. Which is why Fr. Vimal said, they have parcelled him off to a “safe” place.”
Your Grace Archbishop Kuriakose, I had hoped that the Vincentian priests would be cooperative and compassionate. However, that is not the case. If they are now turning hostile to me who they cannot locate physically and who has the knowledge of all the sordid details, you can imagine the condition of the two young girls if they are exposed to interrogation by the priests. What respect that I had for them, all three priests whom I talked to, has evaporated today. It is shocking considering that they are all not diocesan priests but ones who are committed to a mission of renewal and re-evangelization of the Catholic Church through their popular retreat centres which are erected all over India.
There is much more that I can write here but I trust in your using your good offices to bring the criminal priest Fr. Joby to justice within the Church. I had already hinted to Fr. John and Fr. Joseph that if the Church AND the Congregation try to put pressure or cover-up the matter, I might take the case to the National Commission for Women (NCW), the police and the media. They do not seem to care.
What I want is this: For the Provincial to agree to meet with one of the rape survivors in my presence in Bangalore at a neutral place. I will be accompanied by two young men, one from Bangalore and the other from Chennai. The Chennai man and I will require air tickets to be booked CHENNAI-BANGALORE-CHENNAI (it is now not possible to get rail tickets in May to Bangalore) on the first Sunday or third Sunday of May, preferably the third Sunday because of one survivor appearing for her 1st year postgraduate exams in June. Further I am physically handicapped due to a bone disease and I’m blind in one eye and have a broken collar bone that has not healed. The Vincentians will also have to bear our taxi fares to and ex-airport in Chennai and Bangalore. FR. JOBY MUST BE PRESENT BEFORE US, AND HIS PROVINCIAL TOO. Justice must be seen and heard to be dispensed.
If that fails, especially since the Provincial hung up on me in the middle of a sentence when I phoned him, we will have no other alternative but to take recourse to the NCW, filing a police complaint and going to the Media. (One of my daughters-in-law was a reporter with NDTV at one time but not anymore. My relatives in Bangalore are also media-connected.)
Please be assured that I am not threatening anyone, but to save time and energy for everyone involved, it is better to get things moving so that the meeting can be scheduled for a Sunday in May, the third Sunday. I talked to one of the young women just now and they say that the situation is “non-negotiable” and therefore there is no point in their taking calls from the Vincentian Fathers.
Once the Provincial agrees, I will inform him the ex-Chennai date and also the return dates from Bangalore which will be different for me and the person accompanying me from here. I will stay behind to take up if necessary the matter with the NCW/police/media in case the Vincentian Fathers do not ensure that justice is meted out to the victims of Fr. Joby.

Thank you for calling me on my mobile phone earlier this evening and apprising me that you have scheduled a meeting with the Vincentian Provincial Fr. Paul Puthuva tomorrow morning. I pray that the Lord guides you. When you called me, I informed you of the reasons as to why the two girls kept silent… till they found out in December 2016 that Fr. Joby had raped them both unbeknownst to each other. It is only after that that they contacted me through a priest who is a common friend of ours and who has a high regard for my ministry as an apologist. They were trying but could find no one else who was willing and able to confront the Vincentian Fathers.
After Fr. Joseph Eluvathingal turned hostile today and Fr. John Puthanpurackal refused to return my calls and Fr. Paul Puthuva hung up the phone on me, there is nothing more for me to say to them. They revealed their minds and hearts and closed the door on us after 3 weeks, forcing us to take a hardened stance. You may have noted that I have copied them in the CC of my email to you. My only concern apart from seeing Fr. Joby brought to justice for his systematic seduction of the two girls and other women (even inside the very Adoration Chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament at Faridabad Divine Ashram in the Real Presence of the Lord Jesus) was that the Catholic Church be spared the shame of public exposure. But now it is evident that the Vincentians are NOT eager and open to taking punitive action against Fr. Joby to stop him from using his charisma in ministry from preying on other girls (who are virgins!!!!!) So, most regrettably, the young ladies and I and my Bangalore friends have come to the decision that we will go to the National Commission for Women/police/media if they do not summon Fr. Joby down to face at least one of the girls in our presence in Bangalore at a neutral venue after they book and send to us our air tickets to and fro to be able to meet on the third Sunday in May (I will send the details to whoever contacts me) and who will give in writing to me under copy to you that they will reimburse my related taxi expenses etc. before or immediately after the meeting, in cash.
I am in full time ministry since January 1993 and have no source of income since then.
It is important that the girls’ parents are not informed by any of the Vincentian Fathers that their daughters were raped by Fr. Joby. If THEY come to know, the whole world will also have to be informed by us. Fr. Puthuva must be absolutely clear about that. If they try to exert pressure on the parents (who they are in regular contact with), we will have no hesitation in going public.
They must also refrain from making any more calls or sending text messages to the girls as of today as they have been in the habit of doing till today. It is also known to us that Fr. Joby is “tracking” the girls’ activities and movements in Bangalore. If the girls’ mobile phones are scrutinised by the police, a lot will be revealed and more priests than just Fr. Joby will be penalised (for criminal intimidation, obstruction of justice, etc.) Fr. Puthuva should be made aware of that during your meeting with him tomorrow morning.
Your Grace may also have noted that I will stay for three days longer in Bangalore (the return flight date to be given by me will ensure that) to ensure that the girls are not harassed by anyone and also to take up the matter with the National Commission for Women (NCW)/police/media in case Fr. Joby does not turn up or in case the hoped for “negotiations” between the two parties fail.
In my earlier email to Your Grace, I had said that Fr. Paul Puthuva had suggested we meet in Aluva. I am not sure if he said Alwaye or Alappuzha or Aluva as the similarity of the names confuses me.
One or two of the priests who I talked to were asking for the girls to submit “proof” of rape to them on the phone! I can assure Your Grace that we have enough that will be acceptable to the Crime Branch and the NCW, and if the Vincentian Fathers are not satisfied with what we have, the police will get it for them out of Fr. Joby. I anticipate that this will be the biggest case ever to blow up in the face of the Indian Church. Can Your Grace imagine 20-years-olds deposing in writing or orally before aggressive priests like these? They will need our help and we are restricting it to just three individuals from our side accompanying the girl to the meeting. We could definitely arrange for more but are trying to avoid publicity more than is necessary. The person accompanying me from Chennai is my younger son who has been in media and events for at least 15 years. He is “free” to travel to Bangalore only on Sundays. One of the persons from Bangalore helped me in going undercover and investigating the Emperor Emmanuel Church cult in Muriyad, near Irinjalakuda, in July 2010, etc.
Fr. Joby made one of the complainants destroy all her diaries by burning them and the other her phone records!!! I will submit a detailed written report of his sordid, disgusting activities to the Vincentians at the proposed meeting in Bangalore.
If you will recall, I had contacted you in November 2012 regarding false mystic Vassula Ryden’s proposed programme at Divine Retreat Ashram, Faridabad. Your Grace had intervened and she was not able to enter India ever after that.

However, they still continue to call up the parents and the two girls. Fr. John phoned the younger girl yesterday at noon using someone else’s number; when he disclosed that it was he, she told him that she was busy and hung up the phone.
What do you suggest that we do, considering that the Provincial has not made any attempt to keep me/our team informed of whether he is making arrangements for our air travel and meeting with him and Fr. Joby in Bangalore?
Meanwhile, a Catholic woman counselor from Bangalore with experience in such cases has joined our team and will also be present along with us at the meeting on the third Sunday in May.

I thank you for your prompt response. But the content of your letter leaves us in a dilemma. We cannot wait indefinitely for the Vincentians to contact us. I am hesitant to contact them again, because if they are hostile or evasive as they were earlier, we will have no option left but to stop wasting our time and go public. Is there any concrete suggestion that you may have to give us? Till now we were trusting that your intervention would cause them to drop all pretense of ignorance of the sexual molestations of Fr. Joby which have spanned several years. I am really sorry to be troubling you, but our small team is trying to resolve this issue in the Catholic way and we appear to have exhausted our resources in the Church.

I thank you for responding and pointing out my mistake. I should have been more precise in my remarks. I had made a sort of template to use as a reminder for all the other ecclesiastical offices that did not respond at all. My letter to you should have been modified but I let it that way in order to evoke a response from you. Technically, you are correct in your contention that you did reply to me — thrice. But finally, my letter of April 20 (reproduced below) was ignored by you.
If indeed the Vincentian Provincial “interrogated” the rapist-priest, why is it that neither you nor he informed me that both of you have accepted Fr. Joby Kachappilly’s denial despite the fact that I have written multiple letters to you both apart from my phone calls? Our team believes (and so will everyone else in future) that if Fr. Joby Kachappilly is truly innocent and found by you to be so, then Fr. Paul Puthuva and you would have been more than eager to telephone me or write to me and convey to me your satisfaction with the outcome of the “interrogation”. The very fact that no one has done so means that they know that he is guilty, many, many Vincentian priests do, and they are hoping and praying that this issue will simply go away; but, we assure you, it will not.
Did you imagine that the priest would freely admit that he has sexually assaulted and raped several women? I do not understand what you mean by “the Provincial, who does not have received any complaints thus far”. All the Vincentian priests at Faridabad in your Archdiocese, and Kalyan, Mumbai, are aware of his being a sexual predator for many years now. I have provided some “evidence” of that in my letters to you from April 6 onwards. The Provincial’s statement as quoted by you implies that our charges are fabricated (pure lies) and that Fr. Joby is innocent and that you both believe him.
I guess then that we will have to leave it to the police to investigate the matter when we go fully public, hopefully in mid-August. Meanwhile, to create records which we intend to submit to the would-be investigators, we continue to follow protocol as Catholics by bringing the matter repeatedly to the attention of the authorities in the Church in India, although it appears to be an exercise in futility. We are, through our letters and the series of

reports (being continued in
04) giving only limited evidence about Fr. Joby’s crimes in order to protect our team and the victim-survivors. We have now come to understand that we cannot trust any priest/Bishop/Cardinal or depend on them to ensure that justice is done.
You were the only episcopal authority that I had trusted in and it seems now that that hope is belied.
The progress (or lack of it) of this case is following the same pattern that all other similar cases have as reported by me in

I will ensure that it does even — and especially if — the victim-survivors are intimidated, pull out or turn hostile), it will be known to all that this is one more case where the Church has failed to act on a complaint and instead downplayed the concerns of those seeking justice and covered-up for the perpetrator, and all the parties concern will be known to one and all. It also appears that the Church has learned no lessons from the Fr. Robin Vadakkancherry case (my report
03).

I understand that yesterday Fr. John has sent a message to the girl’s mother saying “Pls tell (name withheld) to call me”. Please convey to all your priests as well as to Fr. Joby that if they continue to contact the girls OR their parents, they risk endangering the terms of the understanding which we have set and you have hopefully agreed to as the Provincial of the Order. If this continues, please do not hold us responsible for mistrusting you all and backing off and going elsewhere. The girls simply do not trust you all. Neither do I, anymore, from two days ago when you hung up on me when I was trying to have a productive conversation with you and the other two priests turned hostile on me.

A Vincentian priest of the Mary Matha Province has sexually molested/raped several young women for several years from at least the year 2014 till December 2016*. The matter is known to many Vincentian priests, and I know this because I have been talking to them on the phone. Following some issues that surfaced in Toronto, Canada, he was recalled. However, he came to India and committed a rape in a hotel room in Bangalore after that. The Vincentians later sent him to Rome where he is now in hiding. *Correction. It should read as “2013 till December 2015“. -Michael
Two of the girls are in contact with our team of Catholic lay persons and are ready to depose before the Church authorities in the presence of the perpetrator of the crimes.
I have spoken on the phone to the Provincial Superior, but eventually he turned hostile and hung up the phone on me.
The same is the case with the other Vincentian priests who I approached,
I then contacted an Archbishop* who agreed to mediate and ensure that justice is done. Our team laid out certain conditions for a meeting and fixed a day for the same, in Bangalore. The Archbishop summoned the Provincial and talked to him in person and then assured me on the phone as well as by a couple of emails that the Vincentian congregation would proceed as per our suggested directions. The Provincial wrote an email to me on April 7 assuring me that he “will look into the matter with due seriousness”. The Provincial was also committed to call a Council meeting on April 10 according to the Archbishop. *Most Rev. Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, the Syro-Malabar Archbishop of Faridabad. -Michael
However, we have not heard anything from anyone till today.
Instead, what the priests are doing, ever since our team took up the case, has been to telephone and text the girls and their parents, sometimes from unknown numbers to catch them off guard. This is harassment which I specifically requested them to avoid. So, we got back to the Archbishop bit it appears that he has no juridical control over the case because he wrote to me on the 20th of April, “Fr X being a religious, it is up to the competent Superior to take necessary actions on the matter.” Therefore we decided to write to you today. I replied, saying that we have almost exhausted all our resources and requesting him to suggest some other option, but he has not responded.
Our experience from reading reports in the media has been that the Church authorities will never take action against the erring priests until the matter goes to the police and the press, the National Commission for Women and the secular media, which we are preparing to do in this case as the last resort.
However, as faithful Catholics, we prefer that this sordid scandal remains within the Church even though this priest deserves to be jailed for destroying innocent lives. So, we hope that it does not come to our going public.
We might add that he has molested one of them in the Blessed Sacrament chapel of the retreat centre (in Faridabad) where he was the Director, and he has once sent one of the raped girls pictures of himself completely disrobed and naked using Skype. He also travels in India as “Mr.” so-and-so, not as a priest, and we have proof of that.
Your Eminence, if you are interested in ensuring that the story of the molestation and rape of these girls by a Catholic priest does not surface in the national media, and that justice is done according to Church Law, please reply to me at michaelprabhu@vsnl.net.
If and when we hear positively from you, we will provide you with some of the details of the case including the non-negotiable conditions that we have set before the Provincial and the Archbishop in order to protect ourselves and the two rape survivors who we are representing. As the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, I would like to inform you that I shall send your letter and my personal advice on the issue to the Superior General and Provincial of the accused. I shall also send this letter to the officials of the CRI in Delhi who generally deal with the matters of the Religious in India. At the moment, given its present structure, the Episcopal Conference itself does not have jurisdiction over the Mary Matha Province of the Vincentians. You did right by contacting the Provincial and the Archbishop. Please also let me know whether the Mary Matha Province belongs to the Latin Rite and not the Syro Malabar Rite.
Once I have your reply, I will write to the Provincial concerned and advise him how to proceed.

I appreciate your taking my letter seriously as we intend to pursue this matter to the conclusion of bringing the perpetrator priest to justice. In a case of this nature, your delay in responding was inordinate. Email can be attended from anywhere in the world, and except for a couple of weeks since my email of April 22, your Eminence’s archdiocesan The Examiner “Engagements” column shows that you were very much in Mumbai.
The name of the Vincentian priest who raped/sexually assaulted the young women is Fr. Joby Kachappilly. He belongs to the Syro-Malabar rite. Just as I wrote to you, I had written to the President of the CBCI, to several other senior ecclesiastics (of the three different rites) and the executive secretaries of different Commissions, and to the Apostolic Nuncio. These emails will be part of the records that we place before the police (when we file our case) and the National Commission for Women, to give evidence that we followed protocol and that the authorities of the Church in India did not bother to respond. We will also be sending all of them hard copies by Registered Post Acknowledgement Due.
Fr. Kachappilly’s Provincial is Fr. John Puthuva**. The Archbishop who mediated and then dropped out is Most Rev. Kuriakose Bharanikulangara of Faridabad (of the Syro-Malabar rite). I had written and spoken over the ‘phone to both of them as well as to other Vincentian priests connected with the Divine Retreat Ashram in Faridabad where one of the assaults took place. The other was in a hotel room in Bangalore.
Just as the police do sometimes when they do not want to register an F.I.R. or case brought to them by victim-survivors, the Indian Church appears to be now treating this rape of two young girls as a matter of “jurisdiction”. Please do not follow this course by asking me to take up the matter with yet someone else.
If the original terms and conditions set forward to the Father Provincial by us are not met, we intend to go public with the matter. One requirement is that Fr. Joby Kachappilly face the victim-survivors and our team at a neutral venue in Bangalore. He must be defrocked and laicized. The other is that the parents of the two girls be absolutely kept out of the picture as they do not know the tragedy of what has happened to their daughters. From the day we contacted the Vincentian priests, they have been making incessant calls and sending text messages to the girls, often from unknown numbers. This too is a criminal act and Fr. Paul Puthuva is an accomplice to it. Please ensure that the Vincentians DO NOT again attempt to exert psychological pressure on the rape survivors after they hear from you.
Additionally, because the Father Provincial reneged on his assurances to us, we are considering claiming financial damages from the Vincentian Congregation. The original dates suggested by us were in mid-May. Now, after your kind intervention, we are going to set them for mid-August. Two air-tickets Chennai-Bangalore-Chennai will have to be booked by them for me and an attendant (as I am handicapped) in order to ensure that they are serious about bringing Fr. Kachappilly to justice. Also the expenses that we will incur in Bangalore etc. have to be met by them. The meeting will have to be fixed on a Sunday or public holiday so that my attendant can come with me.

A Vincentian priest of the Mary Matha Province has sexually molested/raped several young women for several years from at least the year 2014 till December 2016*. The matter is known to many Vincentian priests, and I know this because I have been talking to them on the phone. Following some issues that surfaced in Toronto, Canada, he was recalled. However, he came to India and committed a rape in a hotel room in Bangalore after that. The Vincentians later sent him to Rome where he is now in hiding. *Correction. It should read as “2013 till December 2015“. –Michael
Two of the girls are in contact with our team of Catholic lay persons and are ready to depose before the Church authorities in the presence of the perpetrator of the crimes.
I have spoken on the phone to the Provincial Superior, but eventually he turned hostile and hung up the phone on me.
The same is the case with the other Vincentian priests who I approached.
I then contacted an Archbishop* who agreed to mediate and ensure that justice is done. Our team laid out certain conditions for a meeting and fixed a day for the same, in Bangalore. The Archbishop summoned the Provincial and talked to him in person and then assured me on the phone as well as by a couple of emails that the Vincentian congregation would proceed as per our suggested directions. The Provincial wrote an email to me on April 7 assuring me that he “will look into the matter with due seriousness”. The Provincial was also committed to call a Council meeting on April 10 according to the Archbishop.

However, we have not heard anything from anyone till today.
Instead, what the priests are doing, ever since our team took up the case, has been to telephone and text the girls and their parents, sometimes from unknown numbers to catch them off guard. This is harassment which I specifically requested them to avoid. So, we got back to the Archbishop bit it appears that he has no juridical control over the case because he wrote to me on the 20th of April, “Fr X being a religious, it is up to the competent Superior to take necessary actions on the matter.” Therefore we decided to write to you today. I replied, saying that we have almost exhausted all our resources and requesting him to suggest some other option, but he has not responded.
Our experience from reading reports in the media has been that the Church authorities will never take action against the erring priests until the matter goes to the police and the press, the National Commission for Women and the secular media, which we are preparing to do in this case as the last resort.
However, as faithful Catholics, we prefer that this sordid scandal remains within the Church even though this priest deserves to be jailed for destroying innocent lives. So, we hope that it does not come to our going public. We might add that he has molested one of them in the Blessed Sacrament chapel of the retreat centre (in Faridabad) where he was the Director, and he has once sent one of the raped girls pictures of himself completely disrobed and naked using Skype.
He also travels in India as “Mr.” so-and-so, not as a priest, and we have proof of that.
Your Grace, if you are interested in ensuring that the story of the molestation and rape of these girls by a Catholic priest does not surface in the national media, and that justice is done according to Church Law, please reply to me at michaelprabhu@vsnl.net.
If and when we hear positively from you, we will provide you with some of the details of the case including the non-negotiable conditions that we have set before the Provincial and the Archbishop in order to protect ourselves and the two rape survivors who we are representing. We are not prepared to talk anymore on the phone because it has proved futile till today and we would like to place our approaching Your Eminence on record in print.

Instead we are being met with intimidation and silence, and the perpetrator is now safely ensconced in Rome. Our team has had no option but to now make the matter public using the Internet/social media.
We are preparing to release further reports in the series furnishing more details in each one, in two or three stages.

It is against the law of this country for anyone to intimidate a victim-survivor of rape or her family on behalf of the perpetrator, and for the names and identities of the girl to be revealed to the media or made public in any form, (including to those in the girl’s family who may not be aware of her having been raped) so as to damage her reputation.
As I wrote to the Church authorities in a few of my most recent emails, and I quote it here for the information of those who did not read it in my earlier-dated emails to them:

The name of the priest is Fr. Joby Kachappilly VC. He was the Director of your Divine Retreat Ashram in Faridabad. We have evidence of his repeatedly sexually molesting one girl at the retreat centre over a period of more than 2 years. He raped another young girl in December 2015 in a hotel room in Bangalore.
Since around mid-March we have followed protocol, not wanting to let the matter come to the knowledge of the secular media, and telephoned and wrote to your Vincentian Marymatha Provincial Superior, to the Syro-Malabar Archbishop of Faridabad, to the Presidents of both the CBCI and the CCBI, to the Apostolic Nuncio, etc., seeking justice for the survivors and action against the priest concerned. Instead we are being met with intimidation and silence, and the perpetrator is now safely ensconced in Rome, we have learned. Our team has had no option but to now make the matter public using the Internet/social media.
We are preparing to release further reports in the series furnishing more details in each one, in two or three stages.
After being posted on my web site www.ephesians-511.net, they are being picked up from there and posted on blogs, etc.
I regret having been left with no other option by the apathy of the Church authorities and your Congregation.
From studying the above 3 files, you will surely realize that we are very serious about pursuing the issue to its conclusion.
The progress (or lack of it) of this case is following the same pattern that all other similar cases have as reported by me in RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE BY INDIAN PRIESTS-CHURCH FAILS TO PUNISH GUILTY 01, 02, 03. When the case breaks in the public domain, (and
I will ensure that it does even — and especially if — the victim-survivors are intimidated, pull out or turn hostile or if their names are, against the law of the land, made public to ANYONE by the Vincentians), it will be known to all that this is one more case where the Church has failed to act on a complaint and instead downplayed the concerns of those seeking justice and covered-up for the perpetrator, and all the parties concern will be known to one and all.
It also appears that the Church has learned no lessons from the Fr. Robin Vadakkancherry case (my report 03).
Please let me know immediately if there is anything that you may be willing to do in the matter before we approach the law and the National Commission for Women for assistance.
All those who are now, if not already, aware of the sexual predation by Fr. Joby Kachappilly and remain silent, are complicit before God and before the law of the land in his crimes.

The name of the priest is Fr. Joby Kachappilly VC. He was the Director of your Divine Retreat Ashram in Faridabad. We have evidence of his repeatedly sexually molesting one girl at the retreat centre over a period of more than 2 years. He raped another young girl in December 2015 in a hotel room in Bangalore.
Since around mid-March we have followed protocol, not wanting to let the matter come to the knowledge of the secular media, and telephoned and wrote to your Vincentian Marymatha Provincial Superior, to the Syro-Malabar Archbishop of Faridabad, to the Presidents of both the CBCI and the CCBI, to the Apostolic Nuncio, etc., seeking justice for the survivors and action against the priest concerned. Instead we are being met with intimidation and silence, and the perpetrator is now safely ensconced in Rome, we have learned. Our team has had no option but to now make the matter public using the Internet/social media.
We are preparing to release further reports in the series furnishing more details in each one, in two or three stages.
After being posted on my web site www.ephesians-511.net, they are being picked up from there and posted on blogs, etc.
I regret having been left with no other option by the apathy of the Church authorities and your Congregation.
From studying the above 3 files, you will surely realize that we are very serious about pursuing the issue to its conclusion.
The progress (or lack of it) of this case is following the same pattern that all other similar cases have as reported by me in RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE BY INDIAN PRIESTS-CHURCH FAILS TO PUNISH GUILTY 01, 02, 03. When the case breaks in the public domain, (and
I will ensure that it does even — and especially if — the victim-survivors are intimidated, pull out or turn hostile or if their names are, against the law of the land, made public to ANYONE by the Vincentians), it will be known to all that this is one more case where the Church has failed to act on a complaint and instead downplayed the concerns of those seeking justice and covered-up for the perpetrator, and all the parties concern will be known to one and all.
It also appears that the Church has learned no lessons from the Fr. Robin Vadakkancherry case (my report 03).
It is against the law of this country for anyone to intimidate a victim-survivor of rape or her family on behalf of the perpetrator, and for the names and identities of the girl to be revealed to the media or made public in any form, (including to those in the girl’s family who may not be aware of her having been raped) so as to damage her reputation.
By an earlier letter to the first Church authorities contacted by us and under BCC to all the other clerics whom we have written to till date, followed by our letter to you of a few minutes ago, in view of the criminal investigation that we expect to occur eventually, we place on record that you have been reminded and warned.
Please let me know immediately if there is anything that you may be willing to do in the matter before we approach the law and the National Commission for Women for assistance.
All those who are now, if not already, aware of the sexual predation by Fr. Joby Kachappilly and remain silent, are complicit before God and before the law of the land in his crimes.

My name is Michael and I live in Chennai. Maybe we met at Logos a few years ago before Fr. Jose Vettiyankal returned there. Your name is familiar.
It has been brought to my attention that Fr. Joby Kachappilly has sexually molested/raped two girls who were ministering at Divine Retreat Ashram, Faridabad, one in Delhi and the other in Bangalore. There are also reports that he has done the same with other women, one of whom was in “love” with him at Divine, Faridabad itself, in Canada and elsewhere. He seems to be a serial predator who has got the “taste” of it.
The young women have been brought to me for getting justice from the Vincentian Congregation and from the Church.
Because they have been deserted by family and can trust no one, I have taken up the matter on their behalf and I am collecting and processing the information and evidence.
I would like to go through this without the police and media being brought in, but I do not know how to proceed discreetly in any other way.
I was given your email id by someone who told me confidentially that you are aware of Fr. Joby’s activities and had disciplined him.
In addition to anything that you might want to share with me to help me out, please give me the email id of Fr. Joby as well as of two or three of his immediate superiors and that of his Provincial. I give you my solemn assurance that I will not at any time reveal our correspondence and our contact with each other in case you do in order to ensure that Fr. Joby is severely disciplined and the girls’ shame is addressed.
I understand that you are in Rome, and so is Fr. Joby for “higher studies”.

I apologize for having to bother you with this.
We have emailed every priest in the Vincentian Congregation either individually or in lots of 15 due to our server restrictions. This email to you is the last in our list of Vincentian priests because we know from many years that you are a good man and holy priest and will not associate yourself with these evil matters.
For the record, we have already been in fruitless telephonic contact with Fr John Puthanpurackal and Fr Joseph Eluvathingal and both on the ‘phone as well as by email with Fr Paul Puthuva, the Marymatha Provincial Superior in Angamaly.
We initiated contact around the middle of March 2017.
We have also now written to all of the priests of the Divine Retreat Ashram of the Vincentian Congregation, Faridabad and Kalyan, the Divine Retreat Centre, Muringoor/Potta, and to your Superior General and to all your overseas institutions.

The name of the priest concerned in this matter is Fr. Joby Kachappilly VC. He was the Director of the Divine Retreat Ashram in Faridabad. We have evidence of his repeatedly sexually molesting one girl at the retreat centre over a period of more than 2 years. He raped another young girl in December 2015 in a hotel room in Bangalore.
Since around mid-March we have followed protocol, not wanting to let the matter come to the knowledge of the secular media, and telephoned and wrote to your Vincentian Marymatha Provincial Superior, to the Syro-Malabar Archbishop of Faridabad, to the Presidents of both the CBCI and the CCBI, to the Apostolic Nuncio, etc., seeking justice for the survivors and action against the priest concerned. Instead we are being met with intimidation and silence, and the perpetrator is now safely ensconced in Rome, we have learned.
Our team has had no option but to now make the matter public using the Internet/social media.
We are preparing to release further reports in the series furnishing more details in each one, in two or three stages.
After being posted on my web site www.ephesians-511.net, they are being picked up from there and posted on blogs, etc.
I regret having been left with no other option by the apathy of the Church authorities and your Congregation.
From studying the above 3 files, you will surely realize that we are very serious about pursuing the issue to its conclusion.
The progress (or lack of it) of this case is following the same pattern that all other similar cases have as reported by me in RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE BY INDIAN PRIESTS-CHURCH FAILS TO PUNISH GUILTY 01, 02, 03. When the case breaks in the public domain, (and
I will ensure that it does even — and especially if — the victim-survivors are intimidated, pull out or turn hostile or if their names are, against the law of the land, made public to ANYONE by the Vincentians), it will be known to all that this is one more case where the Church has failed to act on a complaint and instead downplayed the concerns of those seeking justice and covered-up for the perpetrator, and all the parties concern will be known to one and all.
It also appears that the Church has learned no lessons from the Fr. Robin Vadakkancherry case (my report 03).
It is against the law of this country for anyone to intimidate a victim-survivor of rape or her family on behalf of the perpetrator, and for the names and identities of the girl to be revealed to the media or made public in any form, (including to those in the girl’s family who may not be aware of her having been raped) so as to damage her reputation.
By an earlier letter to the first Church authorities contacted by us and under BCC to all the other clerics whom we have written to till date, and in view of the criminal investigation that we expect to occur eventually, we place on record that all Vincentian priests and senior hierarchy of the Indian Church have been reminded and warned.
The following two paragraphs are what I have included in all of my email letters till date:
Please let me know immediately if there is anything that you may be willing to do in the matter before we approach the law and the National Commission for Women for assistance.
All those who are now, if not already, aware of the sexual predation by Fr. Joby Kachappilly and remain silent, are complicit before God and before the law of the land in his crimes.
