The foreword was written by Cardinal Ivan Dias, prefect emeritus of the (Vatican) Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. FOREWORD

The Catholic Church, at the dawn of the third millennium after Christ, finds itself in the midst of a fierce battle between the forces of good and evil, between God and Satan, resulting from the fall of our first parents Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. This ferocious combat has wound its way through history and will continue until the end of time. The intensity of this conflict has increased most notably in the past two centuries, as the forces of evil have misled a large segment of humanity to bow before the pseudo-gods of rationalism, secularism, and relativism: their aim is to create a world where God is irrelevant, and is replaced with the idols of hedonism and materialism, while banishing the natural law and conscience to history.
The popes of the past century have recognized this assault and spoken of it in prophetic terms encouraging the Church to read the signs of the times in the light of its eschatological journey towards the new heaven and new earth.
A decisive moment in the spiritual combat was when the Blessed Virgin entered into the battle fray in the nineteenth century with her apparitions at Rue du Bac in Paris, and thereafter at La Salette and Lourdes in France, and in many other places all around the world, some of which still await the approval of the Holy See.
These supernatural events could, in a sense, open the pages of the Book of Revelation with more clarity, as in chapter twelve, narrating the confrontation between the “Woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars” (12:1), and a “great red dragon” (12:1-17). It is the same Woman mentioned in Genesis when God cursed the serpent saying: “I shall put enmities between you and the Woman, between your seed and her seed: she shall crush your head” (3:15). Mary is, indeed, the Woman of Genesis and the Woman of the Apocalypse. The Marian era that is reaching its climax now is shrouded in the mystery of Divine providence.
It is preparing the Church for the final showdown between God and Satan, involving the persecution of Christians by the Antichrist and the inevitable martyrdom that will follow, as the last part of the third secret of Fatima would seem to foretell. The Holy Spirit has guided the recent popes to understand the importance of these challenging times and to fulfill certain wishes from heaven in preparation for the final clash: for instance, the Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Divine Mercy devotion and dedicating the second Sunday of Easter to it, and the recitation of the Holy Rosary. In their ordinary magisterium, they have drawn our attention to the crisis unfolding; we may recall the warnings of modernism and apostasy of St. Pius X, the mystical intuition of Pius XII and the “smoke of Satan” seen by Paul VI.
On the other hand, the past century, in particular, has abounded in signs pointing towards “a new heaven and a new earth.” Pope John XXIII prayed for a New Pentecost and convoked the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council which, besides strengthening the inner cohesion and sanctity of the faithful, opened avenues of dialogue with other Christian communities, with non-Christians, and even with non-believers. His successors toiled unceasingly to promote “a civilization of love.” Blessed John Paul II gave a sharper focus to the eschatological dimension of the Church as he proclaimed a “new advent.” Pope Benedict XVI stated recently: “Indeed, it was a concern of John Paul II to make clear that we are looking ahead to the coming of Christ: that consequently the One who has come is also, even more so, the One who is to come and that, from this perspective, we should live out our faith toward the future” (Light of the World, 63).
For the great Polish Pontiff, a joyful watchfulness for the second advent of Jesus was to be an ever-present theme of his – even calling the youth of the Church “sentinels who keep watch, preparing for the glorious return of the risen Lord.” Pope Benedict XVI has also spoken prophetically in similar fashion in recent years declaring: “One day, not far off, everything will find its fulfillment in the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom of justice and peace” (First Vespers of Advent, 2009). He has also prayed for the hastening of the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at the Shrine of Fatima, and in union with his great predecessor urged vigilance from all the faithful in the face of the gathering dark clouds. For our present Holy Father, truly a theologian pope, the Catholic Church must awaken from its interior sinfulness and be purified, as it awaits what the Lord will allow for its passion and resurrection – for only in this way will the Lord find faith on earth when He returns (cf. Lk. 18:8).
What the popes of the Marian era have given us is a prophetic stream running alongside that of private revelations from visionaries and mystics. They confirm, through the authority of their office, the knowledge that we live in days leading towards the greatest triumph of God and the installation of His eternal Kingdom. They speak of hope and joy for the complete renewal of the Universe, and in doing so invite us to live like the saints immersed in the love of God and neighbor. There are many signs taking place on earth and in the heavens that point towards the dawning of a new day. In spite of the pain and suffering endured by so many throughout the world we can live our faith, safe in the knowledge that the final victory of good over evil is already assured and that God is preparing the fulfillment of the great prophecy found in the Book of Revelation: “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things have passed away” (Rev. 21:4).
The Blessed Virgin Mary has an important role to play in Christ Our Lord’s Second Advent. St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Monfort [sic] begins his renowned Treatise on the True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary with these words: “It was through the Blessed Virgin Mary that Jesus came into the world, and it is also through her that He must reign in the world.” It is indeed amazing to see how Mary has been involved in the well-being of the children she received at the foot of Jesus’ cross on Calvary.

It seems that he went on to claim a total of 28 further apparitions by 1986, with messages which became increasingly apocalyptic in tone, including predictions of various evils which have not materialized. The Blessed Virgin is weaving an enormous network, building up a large army of her devoted children in order to launch a frontal and final assault against Satan, and thus paving the way for the glorious victory of Jesus Christ, her beloved Son. Truly: “Who is she who comes forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in battle array?” (Song 6:10).
The exact day and hour of Christ Our Lord’s second coming is a closely guarded secret in the bosom of God our heavenly Father. It remains for us to heed Jesus’ exhortation: “Be prepared, because it will come upon you like a thief in the night.”
Stephen Walford’s book, Heralds of the Second Coming: Our Lady, the Divine Mercy and the Popes of the Marian Era from Blessed Pius IX to Benedict XVI, will be a beacon of light to many, exhorting all to watch and pray that those who will go through the “great tribulation” may persevere with courage in the “Faith of our Fathers living still through dungeon, fire, and sword” until Christ’s final victory over Satan, thanks to Mary, His Immaculate Mother and ours as well.

On reading the Foreword written by Cardinal Ivan Dias for the book by Stephen Walford, I found that there are problematic issues with a number of the thirty-two “Marian apparition” sites listed by the Cardinal. I wrote to two of my knowledgeable Catholic friends, one of who lives in Switzerland and the other in Belgium, who use the Internet to keep Catholics informed about false mystics and unapproved apparitions and seers, and who exchange information with other Catholic apologists. My letter and their replies:

Please let me know in general what you think of this.

Are there any errors that you have knowledge of?

Do you know anything about the author Stephen Walford? What about this Matt C. Abbott?

Which are the unapproved apparition sites and which do you think are false ones but yet listed favourably by our Cardinal?

I intend to write a critique because the foreword is written by an Indian cardinal who was/is a high-ranking Vatican official.

I am not very knowledgeable on this subject and hence I seek your help so as not to make a mistake in my report.

I’ve read the preface of Cardinal Dias to Stephen Walford’s book, which seems to be about Marian apparitions announcing the end of times.

I don’t know Stephen Walford or Matt C. Abbott
Cardinal Dias seems to be not very critical, but he himself adds that some ‘apparitions’ are still ‘awaiting approval of the Holy See’.
But it is NOT up to Rome to approve ‘apparitions’. This belongs to the normal jurisdiction of the local bishop.
Card. Dias never mentions the warnings against false ‘apparitions’, in general (St. John of the Cross, Grignion de Montfort, John Paul II…) or by local authorities.
Akita has been approved by Bishop Ito, but NOT by his successor.
In Kibeho some of the ‘seers’ got approval, not all of them.
Medjugorje has been rejected by 2 successive bishops and by all commissions (diocesan & national YU).
Garabandal has been rejected by 8(!) consecutive bishops of Santander.
Naju has been rejected by the Korean archbishop.
Amsterdam has been ‘approved’ by bishop Punt without serious study. This approval is not valid, because it had been definitively rejected by Rome before.
Zeitoun is dubious. An Egyptian bishop told me it was set up by the government with laser beams to attract (the money of) tourists.
Civitavecchia has never been ‘approved’. The local bishop has been fooled. The blood tears of the statue of the Madonna of Medjugorje have been proven to have a male origin. The owner of the statue (an electrician) refused examination of his D.N.A.

MY COMMENTS

Considering his status as Prefect emeritus of a Vatican Congregation and member of the CDF, Cardinal Ivan Dias should have exercised prudence in lumping together the few Marian apparition sites that are Church-approved along with controversial ones and those of dubious nature, and alleged manifestations which the local bishops have continued, for several decades in some cases, to reject as false/not of supernatural origin.

An approved Marian apparition is one that has been examined by the CDF either based on laid down criteria or internal procedures in place before that, and has been granted approval by the local bishop based on the direction of the CDF or received a direct approval from the Holy See.

Rome has only officially confirmed the apparitions at Knock, Guadalupe, Saint-Étienne-le-Laus, Paris – Rue du Bac (Miraculous Medal), La Salette, Lourdes, Fátima, Pontmain, Beauraing, and Banneux.

Some like Saragozza [Zaragoza, in Spain], Santa Maria Maggiore [St. Mary Major, Rome] and Walsingham [England] and Vailankanni in India are traditional centuries-old celebrations accepted as genuine by the Church long before the CDF came into existence and determined the authenticity of later occurrences elsewhere around the world.

According to Fr Salvatore M. Perrella of the Marianum Pontifical Institute in Rome, of the 295 reported apparitions studied by the Holy See through the centuries only 12 have been approved, the latest being the May 2008 approval of the 17th- and 18th-century apparitions of Our Lady of Laus.

Only three of the hundreds of reported apparitions of Our Lady in the last century have received unreserved approval of validity by the proper ecclesiastical authorities – Fátima (1917), Beauraing (1932) and Banneaux (1933). In the last 60-70 years alone, the Church has deemed some 230 Marian ‘apparitions’ unworthy of belief.

Naju: by the decree of the local Korean bishop, Julia Kim herself and anyone who visits the “Our Lady of Naju” site as a pilgrim or supports her claims to be a seer are excommunicated.

Akita, Japan: no ecclesiastical decree appears to exist from the CDF even three decades after the fact.

Kibeho: the Rwanda apparitions were accepted by Bishop Misago but have not been given final approval by the CDF. Three of the six seers were accepted as genuine; three were rejected as false.

Amsterdam: Bishop Jozef Marianus Punt of Haarlem-Amsterdam issued a letter that declared this apparition as having a supernatural origin. Later, the CDF took the unusual step of overruling the decision of Bishop Punt of the Netherlands to approve claims that the Virgin Mary had appeared in Amsterdam under the guise of “Lady of All Nations who once was Mary“.

Garabandal:
The reported Spanish apparitions from 1961 to 1965 were examined by the local bishop and were declared as not having evidence of being of supernatural origin.

Different Internet web sites and Catholic ministries accept varying numbers of approved Marian apparition sites, ranging from 7 to 12, depending on the factors taken into consideration by them — whether approved by the local ordinary [see above] or by Rome, and sometimes their selective personal “endorsement” for a particular alleged visionary. According to one web site, the only visionary declared genuine by the Church in the last 160 years is Benoite Rencurel, the shepherdess visionary from
Saint-Étienne-le-Laus, France

I have made available at this ministry’s web site a collation of information on some of the more popular but controversial sites and their visionaries, alleged or approved.

Some writers appear not to have done their homework thoroughly, either inadvertently or intentionally. So apparently has
Cardinal Ivan Dias, as indicated by his all-inclusive list.

He served as the
Apostolic Nuncio to Korea from June 1987 to October 1991 and is embroiled in controversy in regard to the Naju phenomena with Julia Kim and her followers claiming his and therefore the Vatican’s approval. BTW; when in Rome for Pentecost I spoke to people whom I respect and who know Card. I. Dias very well and what they told me was eye-opening. I would never have dreamed that this revered prelate could be such a veritable power-hungry thug.  It gave new meaning to the charge of “filth” and careerism in the church that Pope Benedict spoke of.

MARIAN PILGRIMAGE SITES IN INDIA

1. Vailankanni, Tamil Nadu

There are three major events associated with Our Lady of Good of Health in Vailankanni. The Virgin Mary is said by tradition to have appeared to a shepherd boy named Tamil Krishnannesti Sankaranaranayam who offered the child milk. She is subsequently said to have appeared to and healed a crippled boy selling buttermilk. A group of Portuguese sailors attribute being saved from a violent storm to her intercession. They constructed a larger chapel at their landing spot in Vailankanni…
The apparitions of Our Lady of Good Health have not been formally approved but are implicitly approved by the elevation of the church to basilica status. In 1962, the bishop of the diocese, Dr. R.A. Sundram went to Rome to attend the second session of the Second Vatican Council. At this time he requested that the Holy Father raise the ancient shrine of Our Lady of Vailankanni to the high rank and dignity of a “minor basilica”. The request was carefully looked into and magnanimously granted. His holiness Pope John XXIII graciously issued orders raising the shrine to the exalted state of a minor basilica. Thus the shrine basilica of Vailankanni became linked to the St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome. For more information, click on the link

The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health in Velankanni, Tamil Nadu in southern India does, however, have a legend that involves a number of apparitions. There is no historical record of the apparition of Our Lady of Good Health but the oral tradition suggests that there was an apparition to a Hindu boy in mid 16th century.

An apparition of Our Lady at Batim is the supposed appearance by the Virgin Mary in the compound of Igreja de São Simão e Judas (Church of Saint Simon and Jude), Batim-Ganxim in Goa. The first sighting is purported to have been made by Iveta Gomes on 24 September, 1994. Others have since claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary, as well as other miracles, at this location. Gancim (Batim): Hundreds of faithful from different parts of Goa and a few from abroad flocked to Gancim hill and spent several hours in prayer and penance in the church and compound of St Simon and St Jude.

The secluded church premises was buzzing with activity on Sunday, as the pilgrims had gathered there after receiving news that Mary, whom Christians venerate as the mother of God would appear to some on the hill on March 25, 2012.

Gancim hill has turned into a pilgrimage place for many after Iveta Fernandes had claimed of witnessing a Marian apparition here on September 24, 1994. Though this Marian apparition has no Episcopal approval, the church has also not raised any issue about the gathering of people at the site for expression of their faith. The prayers began at noon and Iveta was present throughout the session, which lasted for almost four hours. “We were informed about a month back that Mother Mary had given a message to Iveta that she would bless everyone who gathers at Gancim on March 25, 2012,” said Fr Michael Fernandes, parish priest of Our Lady of Guadalupe church, Batim.

The prayers commenced with a ‘Way of the Cross’ at 12.30pm from Maina. The pilgrims trudged up the hill on a pilgrimage, pondering over Christ’s suffering and death. Other pilgrims also reached the place and kept pouring in till almost 3pm. After reaching, they assembled in the small chapel, but most of them spilled out in the open, braving the intense heat while some stood in the shade of trees in the chapel compound. The parish priest then led the prayer session, including adoration of the Blessed Sacrament as the large gathering comprising men, women, youth and children participated, paying no heed to the blazing sun. The scene later shifted to the chapel compound for recitation of the prayer of Divine Mercy and sorrowful mysteries of the rosary at 3pm. Iveta, who was accompanied by her husband Felix, was escorted into an enclosure around a cross that was erected at the site of the first apparition.

As Gomes and her husband knelt before the cross facing the overhead sun, hundreds of others also joined them in prayer. The pilgrims meditated over Christ’s sufferings and many cried and wept. Occasionally, some pilgrims looked up towards the sun, hoping to see a Marian apparition.

Iveta, who spoke after rosary, said that during the third mystery, Mother Mary had told her that she had blessed everyone who had gathered at Gancim. “She appeared only to her, but there were no other claims,” a source said. The pilgrims started to disperse while only a few remained behind for the Eucharistic service in Gancim church at 4pm.

Sources said that Iveta has received another message that Mother Mary will again bless the faithful on the feast day of Divine Mercy on April 15, 2012.
