The Rise and Demise of Ancy D’Souza’s Mangalorean Catholics yahoo group

The Mangalorean Catholics (MC) yahoogroup list was launched under the name “Mangalorean Canara Konkani Catholics” on June 3, 2004 by Ancy Salvatore D’Souza, Paladka/Mumbai, also known as Salu Soz (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/MangaloreanCatholics/conversations/topics/1154).

The final MC digest issued was no. 2954 on January 3, 2015. It contained no hint that it would be the last, no farewell or goodbye. It contained posts mainly from the owner, Salu Soz, himself a “progressive”, and from the three liberal Catholic contributors, the Bombay Catholic Sabha, Robin Viegas and Fr. Claude Saldanha O.P. The previous digest no. 2953 was almost a carbon copy of 2954. So too was 2952. The semblance of anything Catholic in “MangaloreanCatholics” was long since gone. The last messages reported an existence of 4093 members (they had dreamed of a target of 50,000*) but not more than a dozen were posting.

The life span of MC: ten and a half years.

Dear Fr. Juze (SVD, an active member of MC),

I have noted that despite your illnesses and limitations, you have been faithfully contributing spiritually good material to MangaloreanCatholics, as a Catholic priest, which is highly commendable. God bless you for that. You also invest a lot of your time and energy to commenting on various secular issues that members post in MC.

But I humbly ask you to consider whether you are doing the right thing when at the same time you do not correct blatant error that is propagated in the same columns, even as the one copied below [promoting yoga and tai chi] posted by the owner-moderator Mr. Ancy D’Souza.

An ordained cleric of the Church exercises the three-fold ministry of Jesus, which include priest and prophet. A priest is called to be a prophet by correcting error and speaking the truth however costly, and however uncomfortable it might be to others.

I am extremely sorry that despite two Vatican Documents mentioning these New Age practices all the priests on this forum maintain a discrete silence.

Sometime back, when Ancy had published some misinformation … a diocesan priest of Bombay, had on his own initiative written a personal letter to Ancy telling him that he was wrong, and explaining why. I myself had done so many times in the past whenever I saw error posted by any of the members, and Ancy has always posted my emails on the forum. But then he again always posted misinformation as before, and the posting copied below is an example.

I have registered my final protest by stopping from posting any information since a couple of months now, and I concede that I may have been wrong in doing that, but that was my decision only because I have more important things to do with my time which is limited. But no one can say that I did not refute error when it was posted in MC.

Unfortunately, a lot of the error is posted by another priest Fr Claude Saldanha OP., who is evidently an out-an-out liberal and supporter of abortion because he copies much of the information from liberal and dissenting sites and people like the National Catholic Reporter, Fr Thomas Reese, America
magazine, Fr Richard McBrien, feminist nuns like Joan Chittister, etc. etc. and especially his continuous glorification of US President Obama, the most notorious anti-life, same-sex marriage international leader ever.

No genuine Catholic can accept this which shows that Mangalorean Catholics is not a Catholic site as its name implies, but a secular one that uses the term “Catholic”.

Catholics are thus misguided by our presence and by our silence. If we participate in the forum without objecting or countering the errors, it implies that we agree with them. Hence we become party to the errors that others might be led into by such misinformations being passed off as truth.

Pope Felix III said, “Not to oppose error is to approve it, and not to defend truth is to suppress it, and indeed, to neglect to confound evil men when we can do it, is no less a sin than to encourage them.”

A number of lay persons including Fr Juze Vas have regularly written in MC supporting my postings in defence of Catholic Faith especially in the past 9 months. It seems that such letters in my favour have made me unpopular with the moderator who has stopped acknowledging any of my emails to him since a few months whereas he was otherwise always most prompt to respond. Truth, I suppose, exacts a heavy price.

There are many anti-Catholic postings being made, many of them by Hrishikesh Shenoy, a Hindu member of Mangalorean Catholics with outrageously anti-Biblical beliefs on almost every moral issue. I have a detailed record of all such errors that have gone unprotested and uncorrected while we close our eyes to them and keep making nice comments and giving other good spiritual advice which loses its impact in the light of the many evil recommendations, some of which I briefly note below as samples:

In the five years between July 2005 and July 2010, when I unsubscribed from MC, I waged war on the secularists, modernists, syncretists, Hinduisers, New Agers, progressives and liberals who had become members of the forum. I had the open as well as covert support of a few good Catholic members including Salu Soz’s moderator Derrick D’Costa of Bahrain who would regularly post information on MC that supported my stands on various issues. I could fill well over a hundred pages of this file with details of the many debates that I engaged in with the enemies of the Church including Reginald Vaz, Allwyn Fernandes, Fr. Claude Saldanha and Hrishikesh Shenoy who were using the forum to poison the minds of the less well-informed and the naïve.

However, eventually, I came to the conclusion that I was wasting my time and energy especially as Salu Soz, the owner, became more openly hostile to my posts.

Thank you for the most useful C.V. of Fr Claude Saldanha O.P. which will be included by me in my report on FR. CLAUDE SALDANHA, LIBERAL PRIEST PROMOTES DISSENT IN MANGALOREAN CATHOLICS GROUP as requested by you.

Since you have addressed me in your post of May 25, this is my response.

Actually, it is you who do not have the courage to post my earlier two letters in the group because you know that they will open the eyes of many to the truth.

1. You reiterate that I have been banned, and I reiterate that that is a lie, having submitted the evidence that it was I who unsubscribed from the group.

2. I have not sent you threatening emails. Instead I have requested you to desist from publishing letters that are from anti-Rome sources.

While they expose the MORAL or administrative failings of our priests and bishops, which I am not against because people have a right to know the truth, one problem is that they are from dissident, feminist and extreme right-wing “Catholic” publications like the National Catholic Reporter, etc. No true Catholic takes them seriously. Meanwhile, the official explanation of Rome on these issues is not posted to give members the true picture. Most recently, all the postings [sent in by two of your already named members] on the condoms statement of the Pope were from such sources alone, or from secular news agencies who always attack or misinterpret anything that comes from Rome. They did not interpret the Pope’s statement as he meant it. One of them, the communications guy — adds on his comments every time as if to mockingly say to us, “Look- this is your Catholic Church!”

I have almost 100 pages of information from reliable sources on the very same subject, but not one of them made it to your group. Why? Why is only that news published which presents the Pope and the Vatican in a bad light?

If you published the SPIRITUAL instead of the MORAL failings of church leaders, I would be your biggest fan, because then you would be leading Catholics away from the error that they do.

In my records, our friend Derrick D’Costa had posted several times the names of the dissenters and liberals whose articles are reproduced by your two main contributors. I too have done so.

All these dissenters’ names, and the magazines that they write for are in a list of dissenters published by an eminent Catholic site to warn Catholics:

How does it make me — in your eyes — a fundamentalist to be on the side of those who are loyal to Rome?

3. I have never criticized the Dominican orders of priests and nuns. Only this particular priest. I am right in doing so. He promotes dissent.

4. Fr. Claude’s C.V. is very, very impressive. But it does not count for anything if he is not faithful to Rome and does not use his knowledge and position of authority to defend her against the attacks of secularism and modernism.

I note that less than a dozen members congratulated him on his Golden Jubilee, one being a priest whom I am unable to contact, the other a nun. The priest, another Fr. Saldanha, wrote to Fr. Claude, “I read all your articles.” Apparently he too finds no problem with Fr. Claude’s postings. If I could get in touch with him, I would ask him at least about the dirty jokes that Fr. Claude posted on several occasions, and to which none of your members, including the many priests even made the slightest show of objection.

I am regular penitent and I am not choosy about my confessor, but I doubt that I would want to confess to a priest who thinks that posting them to 4086 members of the group is something expected of a Roman Catholic priest. The Bible says that what comes out from the mouth is what is in one’s heart.

I also that none of those who are in touch with me sent in their felicitations though I have never suggested anything against the priest privately to anyone.

5. You wrote, “As Fr. Claude informs, before being published his articles are reviewed for doctrinal errors. His messages go to people all over the World and they read by Bishops and the faithful, many of them well educated and instructed. If there any doctrinal errors, he would be notified for correction.”

What articles? Maybe I missed them. I will look out for them in future. As far as I know, he simply reproduces stuff from yellow “Catholic” or secular sources. But maybe I am wrong, and I will scrutinize his postings more carefully in the future because I have not seen any original writing from him till now. Thank you for drawing my attention to this. I am most interested. Especially in what is going from him to the Bishops. I will look into this more closely.

There can be “doctrinal errors” only if his writing is original. My writing too is not original. It is based on authentic Catholic sources that are loyal to Rome so it cannot have doctrinal errors. Fr. Claude’s can have errors because his sources’ only work is to fight Rome’s teachings on issues such as women priests, priestly celibacy, the ordination of women, contraception, etc.

I am happy to hear that Fr. Claude’s articles are reviewed by Bishops before publication. But these Bishops must also then be dissenters or rebels if they approve them. Till today, I have never come across anyone who sends their articles to Bishops before publication. I will have to go through all Fr. Claude’s postings till date and come back to you on this.

6. This week, one of your group members sent me these two Catholic YouTube videos. Each is of 5 minutes. I think that you MUST watch them. They support what I say and do.

Even though I have unsubscribed as a member of your group, I am following all posts and discussions from other ids.

Right from the start, your group has advocated and promoted error, dissent and modernism.

Some strong Catholics ultimately managed to get you to ban the Hindu member Hrishikesh Shenoy whose only role was to sabotage Catholic discussions.

There were one or two other so-called Catholics who could be dealt with by such as us and by Derrick D’Costa who assisted you in moderating the forum until it was too much even for him to cope with.

Because by then two new liberal suns rose on the MC horizon: Allwyn Fernandes and Fr. Claude Saldanha OP.

Fr. Claude can post his rubbish, sourced from dissenting, feminist and Traditionalist Catholic sites, only in MC. Nowhere else. He needs to find a place to vent, and finds MC good for that.

Allwyn writes for other Catholic journals that I read, but he too can post his anti-Catholic tirades only in MC. Elsewhere, he is very careful the way he puts his ideas across.

But, your main anti-Catholic writer is Reginald Vaz. He submits a lot of unsubstantiated tripe, products of his own spiritual nihilism.

I have copied just three of his recent posts below.

What is amazing to me is that there are a number of good priests on your forum, some of whom I am BC copying this letter to, who remain silent about Vaz’s rantings. Some of them make pious and devotional postings, but lack the courage to defend the Faith when it is challenged by people like Vaz.

It is amusing to see you simply copy and paste in MC from Vatican Information Service news [as if you feel so much love for the Church’s pronouncements] when the other postings from men including those I named challenge those very same Catholic ideals.

I am compiling all the errors for a separate report on your group to be sent to the Bishops as well as posted on my web site as a warning to Catholics. Of course, if you check out some of my recent articles and reports (70 new ones to be uploaded by June end), you will find that I have exposed a number of the errors that your site — and others like yours — has promoted.

I once again appeal to you to exert your influence to correct these errors.

No one claims that Ancy (Salu Soz) is not doing some good work too.  But that is not a licence to do the opposite.
Michael has raised several important concerns and he replies by evading the issue and assorted importuning and vitriol. 
I joined this Group because of the word “Catholic” in the name. So obviously I have no interest to see anti-Catholic postings here! 
The Orissa riots coverage and financial assistance managed by the group was outstanding. But then this group has veered off and seems to have lost its way. And it is clear that this has been accompanied by a dramatic fall in support and postings. That is why Ancy is not extirpating anyone from the group- so he can claim a large subscription! It is called embellishing the truth.
Michael Prabhu is an honourable man who would not countenance such perfidy.
This is an amazing allegation. Is that the practise of this group?
No one is discouraging Ancy. He is being urged to remain true to the founding basis of the group and thereby reclaim the earlier status.

Though I had unsubscribed in July 2010, I continued to receive all Mangalorean Catholics posts on different gmail and yahoo mail ids and I was incensed at the new lows to which the forum had descended in misrepresenting the Catholic Faith and in poisoning Catholics with different errors. Accordingly, I would write to the transgressors and to the moderator Salu Soz against those posts and this continued to generate a lot of heat that resulted in the above correspondence.

As I had mentioned earlier, I would need just a couple of hours to update this file with a hundred pages of supporting evidence on the puerile trash that became the regular fare on Mangalorean Catholics.

MC was built on sand and it well deserved to be closed down without a word of thanks or farewell (there were not more than a handful of faithful left anyway) from the owner Salu Soz.
