In our internet ministry commencing 2003, we have remained dedicated to exposing
-Liberals and dissenters in the Indian Church
-Hinduisation of the Indian Church in the guise of inculturation; false ecumenism and interreligious dialogue
-Liturgical abuses and aberrations in the Indian Church
-Errors and abuses in the mainstream Catholic Charismatic Renewal and in major retreat centres in India
-Indian evangelical- (and New Age-) influenced retreat preachers masquerading as Catholics
-Threats to the Catholic faithful from private/unapproved mystics, false revelations, etc.
-New Age (alternative therapies, eastern meditations, psycho-spiritual counseling techniques and devices, etc.) promoted by parishes, Catholic laity and religious institutions and individuals in ministry in India, but we have never concerned ourselves with moral issues for fear of sitting in judgement over people.
We have always been receiving information from individuals about predator priests who seduce or sexually exploit women, more so in the recent past. But we have never till now put such information on our web site.
We now feel constrained to publish on our site certain information in the hope that the Church hierarchy concerned will see that justice is done wherever it still remains to be done, and for three reasons:
1. The issue is downplayed and the predator is protected by the very ecclesiastical authorities who should be disciplining him and comforting the survivor/s;
2. The matter has already been reported or is known to the perpetrators’ authorities but with no effect;
3. The news is no secret and is already in the public domain.
02 continues to reproduce more news stories, spread over a period of several years, taking up from where we left off in report 01, in order to provide further evidence that there are many more sexual predators in the Church than we could have imagined, and that the Church authorities have been engaged in the cover-up and protection of priests charged with sex crimes until they can do so no longer.
02 includes news reports not only of sexual predation by clerical wolves in sheep’s clothing (rape, sodomy), but also of Catholic priests who were arrested for the crimes of kidnapping a bishop, and of murder, and there are even priests who murdered another priest, a seminary rector.
The reports are so very numerous that it would be impossible to chronicle them all or even a substantial percentage of what is available on the Internet.
03 details the rape and impregnation of a minor by Fr. Robin (Mathew) Vadakkancherry, the pastor of St. Sebastian’s Church, Kottiyoor, Kerala, and the scandalous bribery and intimidation of the victim’s parents by the priest in paying a huge sum of money — allegedly out of what he received through dubious business deals — to ensure to the victim’s father so that he confessed to the rape, the attempt by the priest to flee India when the story broke, the collusion of local Church authorities to hush and cover up the rape and the pregnancy, the rapist’s “clout” with Church authorities despite earlier complaints of sexual assault and the priest’s being active in a campaign against the sexual abuse of minors. The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) called the case a “generalization” and an “exception”, resorted to blaming the victim and not the perpetrator, and finally blamed the priest’s rape of the child on the effects of “consumerism”.
From reports numbered 01 through 03, one will see that the sexual abuse of nuns, women in general, minor girls and boys by Indian priests is much more common and frequent than one would have imagined, and that the reaction (or lack of any) of the authorities almost always follows the same pattern. In our compilation of these crimes as reported in the public media, history records that the Indian Church only acts against its criminal priests when their crimes become publicly known and cannot be hidden from scrutiny any longer.

In the case of Fr. Joby Kachappilly VC (04 to 06), a retreat centre Director who sexually molested two young girls (among others) over a period of 3 to 4 years, hoping to keep it within the Church and not “wash the church’s dirty linen in public”, and following protocol, we respectfully contacted (over the ‘phone commencing March 18) the rapist’s confreres and his Provincial Superior and again the Superior and his Archbishop (of the Syro-Malabar rite, both by email on April 6), the senior executives and heads of Church bodies and Commissions (including the Presidents of the CBCI and the CBCI) as well as the Apostolic Nuncio to India, going up to April 22, 2017. Finally, after six weeks we received a response on June 7 from the President of the CCBI (Latin rite) asking us which rite the rapist priest belonged to, evidently already knowing fully well the answer and attempting to evade responsibility for the Syro-Malabar rite priest’s crimes! Today, almost a month later, the Cardinal, Oswald Gracias, has not replied to my email response of June 7 to him; and June 18, 2017 marked three months of our futile attempts to bring the Vincentian priest to justice (one of the victims is ready to testify face-to-face against the serial molester-rapist).
Barring one*, all other letters of ours were not answered by the hierarchy and are reproduced in report 04.
The predator’s brother priests and Provincial went from tolerant dialogue to hostility to silence. They sort of followed the Fr. Robin Vadakkancherry (03) pattern that we summarised above: intimidation and harassment of the victims on the ‘phone and packing off the priest to Rome (being sent for “studies” to Rome and overseas transfers seems to occur immediately when priests are exposed in India for sex crimes).
We had set some demands that included a council at which the Vincentians, the victim and our team would confront the priest and seek that he be defrocked and laicized. The proposed date was in mid-May. The alternative to that, they were informed, was our approaching the police and the media. That did not deter them from maintaining a deafening silence. We have now issued a final email notice to all concerned, including every single Vincentian priest, the date for a meeting being reset for mid-August, the ignoring of which will constrain us to approach the law, the National Commission for Women (NCW), and the secular media. (It was followed by a “FINAL NOTIFICATION” earlier today.)

While updating and just before releasing the 05 file, I received a couple of emails (July 7) from Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay and President, CCBI.
The deafening silence of over 500 Vincentian priests, their Provincial Superior and their Superior General, and their retreat centres in response to our emails and several follow-up letters makes them complicit (legally speaking, they are now accessories to the fact) in the serial sexual molestations of Fr. Joby Kachappilly, before God and before man. Some of them were already aware of his crimes.
We have evidence of that as well as of their harassment of the survivors and their families till the time of publishing. They are anxiously attempting to find out what evidence we have, but that will be handed over to the National Commission for Women and the investigating agencies eventually.
Recently, presenting him with the evidence that we have, we wrote a very strong letter to a senior Vincentian priest who had been intimidating one of the survivors and had finally sent her a blackmail threat on WhatsApp. After hearing from us, he has gone silent realising his predicament. He is one of the very same priests whom we had spoken to in the month of March but chooses not to dialogue with us.
His criminal behaviour will eventually be exposed in a separate report from this ministry.
Meanwhile, what absolutely shocks us is that the priests of this religious order that is dedicated to the renewal of the Church through exercise of the charisms of the Holy Spirit in their many retreats centres continue to sacrilegiously offer Holy Mass and administer the Sacraments despite their brazen cover-up and protection of the criminal, their lies and denial of the truth, their intimidation of the victim-survivors, and the devious strategies that they are employing to silence us. Their individual and collective sin is great.
05 provides the profile of the accused priest Fr. Joby Kachappilly VC, the recent explosion of the scandal of the charges of sexual abuse against George Cardinal Pell, Rome’s reaction to that, the complaint against the Vincentian Congregation in the matter of sexual and other abuse by their priests by Shibu Kalamparambil who has left the Congregation and the priesthood, and the accounts of other nuns who suffered sexual molestation at the hands of priests (a sort of continuation of 01 and 02) whilst being ostracised by their congregations and the hierarchial Church.
I had concluded 05 with these words:
We can see from all of the above that the Church is scandal-hardened, materially rich and wields tremendous political clout, and our priests and bishops are confident of getting away with anything – the cold-blooded financial looting of the laity, misuse of parish funds and building trusts, abetment to suicide, homosexuality, seduction, rape, and murder. And they are more the rule, as we have uncovered, than the exception.
Catholics remain faithful to Christ and His Church NOT BECAUSE of the priests and bishops, BUT DESPITE THEM.

When I started looking for information on the Fr. Joby Kachappilly VC rape case and on the alleged active homosexuality in Indian seminaries, I talked to individuals including a few priests one-on-one as well as over the ‘phone, and I corresponded with a few of them. I was taken aback by some responses, the reluctance to divulge information (which it is evident they had in their possession) and the lack of interest in cooperating with us in our exposé especially when it became evident that the Vincentians and the Church hierarchy were engaging in subterfuge. When I summarised for you on March 20 over the phone about the rape case, you promised to send over to my residence your Chennai team. You took my contact numbers down and gave me your email id upon which I wrote to you the same evening. (The file that I gave you has been renamed as the first in a series of which the 5th and 6th are under preparation and 01 through 04 are on our web site.)
Nothing happened from your side. After more than 3 months, I sent you a reminder on June 23. Once more, you failed to respond.
When I called you at 16:05 hours last evening (July 1) you answered the phone but disconnected immediately on my identifying myself and reminding you of the issue concerning which I was calling. I find that strange and very disconcerting. Your behaviour has completely belied all the melodrama of your championing the rights of sexually abused women on prime time television and inviting viewers to report cases to you and your channel (CNN-IBN) in order that justice will be meted out to them.

We regret to inform you that Fr. Joby is a serial rapist who, almost as soon as he was exposed, has gone into hiding in Rome with the support of almost his entire Vincentian Congregation. THAT is the reason why he “cancelled” out on you. We are trying to bring him to justice WITHIN THE CHURCH but his confreres and Superiors are engaged in denial, cover-up, intimidation and blackmail. The hierarchy of the Indian Church has not responded either although we have been pursuing the case with them for months. Please check out the two files whose titles and links I have provided below.
I have served in very senior positions in the Indian Catholic Charismatic Renewal since 1982. And I have been witness to many tragedies such as these where preachers who have been idolized by the faithful turned out to have feet of clay and scandalized people who trusted more in them than in the Lord.

We know each other since 1984, when you were what, 14? I do know that “Tc” means “take care”. What I meant was what is it doing in the signing off of an email from a Catholic priest who is supposed to bless laity in the names of Jesus and Mary? I do not need to take care; Heaven “takes care” of me.
You may have noticed that I addressed you — in every email to you since your ordination on 20 August 2011 — as “Fr. Vinay Kamath” but you have always, with no exceptions (I checked my file on our correspondence), signed as “Vinay”.
This underlines that you have laicized yourself and, like the great majority of your confreres, do not recognize and project that you are a consecrated priest of the Holy Catholic Church and not a lay man. With this exchange of mails, I began writing in the same lack-of-respect-manner that you were using for me because this is the new Vinay. Not that you were much different earlier. You tried to dissuade me from my ministry several times during the ICPE School in 2000, and once, seated next to you in your car, when you started on it once again, I had to ask you to back off. Which you did.
Your friend Fr. Sanjay Vincent C.Ss.R used our home and airport pick up and drop but did not ever respond to my emails to him (again, his email id was given to me by you). My report will have more details because in my opinion (which you don’t care for anyway) is that Catholics have to be warned about priests like you. Remember that in our home, you were the one who spilled the beans that charismatic ministry leader Kim D and Gayatri M were lesbian lovers. It was a confidential matter and had nothing to do with me. When I rang up Gayatri’s mother, she confirmed it.
Your handling of Vimal’s marriage break-up case was non-committal and pathetic and you never did recognize the girl’s loose moral living, the cover up and perjury by her family and brother (now a priest like you?) I am not defending Vimal as he was equally guilty/to blame, but eventually he turned his life around with proper counseling, brought Jesus in, and is now happily married in the Church and a good husband, father and son.
Several VERY reliable people have shared with me that you are absolutely dangerous in your counseling and “prophetic” messages.
I’m glad that you mentioned your “rule”. I too have “rules” and principles that I stick to in my ministry. A couple of them are to give an individual a chance to redeem himself by doing the right thing before I make a report on him/his errors to be more precise — on my web site, and to make no exceptions.
So, I will be writing a report on your cover-up of a fellow-priest/sodomizer by your not giving me the details that I requested you for. But it is you yourself who gave me his yahoo email id. I may also mention that I already have in my possession the name of his parish, etc. I was just giving you that chance that I mentioned earlier above but you did not take it.
As a matter of fact, I noted the change in you that I observed since you were incardinated into the Archdiocese of Bombay before your ordination. To achieve your ambitions, you’ve got to be one of them, haven’t you, Vinay? You had been dodging answering my emails on pastoral issues ever since then. Just two examples below:
I had written you on March 26, 2011, “What are you so afraid of? Or is it just associating in writing with Michael Prabhu? It makes me wonder – this was a simple question about a Sacrament of the Church! Any seminarian or priest should be eager to answer it. Vinay, if you are afraid as a seminarian or deacon, you may never make a prophetic priest, something that has always been my concern about you. You are good, a nice chap, friendly, approachable, honest and all that, but there’s that little thing, you know, which in the long run is not so little considering the state of the Church and her priests. We lay people do not need any more nice priests who preach nice sermons to keep the bishops, the superiors and the people happy and appreciative. We need watchmen and prophets. I can appreciate if you are just trying to be a little careful before your ordination, but I sincerely do hope that it’s not more than that. […] It is most disappointing. I always recall Jesus’ question to his first priest, Peter, “Do you love me more than [you love] these [others]?””

Fr Sunil Monis is a known repeat sexual offender, an active homosexual who is being protected by the hierarchy of the Church, transferred about, and still having young boys exposed to his unhindered access. You, Vinay, are complicit in this cover-up and are responsible for it before God and the law of the land. I have indisputable evidence on Fr Sunil. I had met the cardinal because I was concerned about certain seminarians whose behaviour I could not approve of. It was necessary to meet him since the superiors of the seminary seemed to be ignorant of such behaviour in the seminary. This was what I wanted to highlight. After he discussed my briefing to him with the bishops, the appointment of a bishop {John Rodrigues} as Rector was the move that he took. This is a very brief account to show you that the cardinal is fully aware of what ever goes on in the Archdiocese. I dread to give you more details, because the print media can be hacked and used by enemies of the church. But I will talk freely when we meet. However, in order to bring about effective changes, he needs the cooperation of all. … He is trying to remedy things in such a way so as to avoid a scandal. This abnormal sinful behaviour of some priests is a new challenge that he faces.
Michael, I feel that you in your own way can also help to see that wrongs, evils are changed to good without exposing the persecuted church in India to non-Christian fundamentalist, hostile groups. If the cardinal was taking “Nelson’s eye” to the happenings in the Archdiocese, then we can challenge him and take a hostile attitude.

Dear Michael, before I joined the priesthood, I used to say to my confessor, “Father, I know that God has called me to the priesthood, but I feel that I am not worthy. Then one day, he literally shouted at me and said “Stop accusing yourself. Go to the seminary and see what kinds of men are there.”
As a layperson, I looked up to the priesthood and to priests, and so when I saw a priest misappropriating parish money, I was shocked.
What I read in your report (04) has utterly shocked and saddened me. I just don’t feel like going for lunch.

Dear Michael, in my life as a layperson and later as a priest, I was always against handing over our problems in the church to any non-Catholic agency, especially an agency that is anti-Christian. Hence when you speak of handing over the cases to the Women’s Commission, I feel uncomfortable since St Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6:1 “When any of you has a grievance against another, do you dare to take it to court before the unrighteous, instead of taking it before the saints?” I understand that a team of people will take up the case. If it was you alone, I would not mind, because I know your standing as a Catholic.
I feel that as Christians, our aim is to first bring healing to the victims and defrock the guilty priest. I don’t know whether we are bound by canon law or state law to pursue the case legally. At times, the family of the victim is the competent authority in such cases, but they often hesitate, because they do not want their daughter to be exposed. This could be because marriage may be difficult. Some don’t want to bring a bad name to the entire church because of the sins of some individual. If the church retains such men in the service of the church, then it is wrong. A personal view.

Michael, I briefly went thru the email and saw the 1 Cor 6:1 reference. Yes that is right, but you already have been doing that. Jesus also says in Matthew 18: 15-17, that we first need to attempt to settle the matter internally — one-on-one, then involve more, but finally if the church authorities refuse to listen, we can have recourse to the ‘Gentile treatment’ option; part of which is the court procedures… If we were to bypass the first two, then 1 Cor 6:1 is a valid objection.
15 “If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one.
16 But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.
17 If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
Incidentally, the above letters from Fr. Name Withheld of the Bombay Archdiocese belie the claim of Cardinal Oswald Gracias (pages 13/14 COVER-UP OF ACTIVE HOMOSEXUAL PRIESTS IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF BOMBAY) concerning the homosexuality scandal among the clergy of his Bombay archdiocese.
I recently met with the rector of a major seminary who told me that apart from a small handful of boys who would make good priests, the great majority of them indulged in pornography, masturbation, consuming alcohol… and homosexuality, but there is nothing much that can be done about the situation and, year after year, such men are being ordained and sent out to serve as our priests. God save us all.
