After returning from World Youth Day at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the man the world refers to as “Pope Francis” went straight to St. Mary Major Basilica in the Vatican and brought two souvenirs from Brazil with him: a yellow-green beach ball and a green sports jersey. He placed both on the altar of St. Mary Major, right next to the Tabernacle (!) Yes, you read that right. The “Pope” placed two utterly profane things on the altar of one of the most sacrosanct churches of all of Christendom. This shows that this man has absolutely no sense of the sacred and that neo-traditionalist spinmeister Christopher Ferrara was totally out of bounds to claim that Francis has a “Marian piety of the most traditional sort” simply because he visited St. Mary Major the first day of his “pontificate” to pray (see Ferrara, “Pope Francis: The Marian Dimension”). No one with a genuine Marian piety would commit such a sacrilege against her Divine Son.
Bergoglio is too busy being “humble” than to pay attention to such nitpicky details, you know. After all, he isn’t part of the “Pelagian current” of people that count Rosaries and such, nor does he care for “restorationism” that “seeks to recover the lost past” (see here).
So, a beach ball and a jersey on the altar next to the tabernacle — what’s the big deal? Well, for a Catholic, the “big deal” is the following:
The Altar — that’s where (in a valid Mass) the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity becomes present (a belief which Francis supposedly shares); it is a sacramental that actually symbolizes Christ Himself. It’s the perfect place for a beach ball, right? And he put it right next to the Tabernacle, to boot. The Tabernacle — that’s the place where the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar is kept, our Lord dwelling with us. That’s why we genuflect in front of It and that’s why It has pride of place in a real Catholic church: right in the center on the altar. It is here that our beloved and ever-adorable “Prisoner of Love” dwells, for our sake and out of Love for us — God made man, the Infinite God under the appearance of bread.
“O Love neglected! O Goodness but too little known!”

So far, Jorge Bergoglio (Francis) is living up very well to his reputation, which stems from his years as “Archbishop” of Buenos Aires, of having no sense of sacrality (it seems that the god he really adores is the poor). A reader’s comment: I think this was more of Francis offering something he valued to the Lord by placing it upon the altar. He’s done similar things with souvenirs that he has received on papal visits in the past. I would agree however that the altar, especially that of one of the Major Basilicas of Christendom, is no place to put such things.

After his arrival at Ciampino airport, the Holy Father chose to stop at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major to offer a brief prayer to the Blessed Virgin for World Youth Day.
Seeing the Pope as he entered the Basilica, a group of young people approached him and offered him a T-shirt and a ball. Pope Francis later offered the gifts to the Madonna.

1. Pardon my choice of words but…un-freaking-believable! I hate to say this but this man is really starting to frighten me, as the Pope, for goodness sake.
2. If a layman or a priest in parish church had placed a beach ball on the altar I would have been dismayed. But for a Pope to do it…I could hardly believe my eyes when I watched this on the TV news last night.
An altar in a Catholic Church is for the offering of the most sacred of sacred sacrifices…Surely a Pope should know better than this?
3. Every day he does something worse. From his very first appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s when he didn’t wear the proper vestments, I knew we were in for a bad time.
And unfortunately, I think the Roman Catholic Church is in for a bad time for a few years (hopefully no more than 4).
Then he will either have passed, or resigned…and maybe we will be lucky enough to get a Roman Catholic pope!
I wonder if Benedict XVI is sorry he resigned?
“On the mensa of the altar should be placed only those things required for the celebration of the Mass.” (GIRM #306)
Nothing except the candlesticks, the sacred vessels necessary for liturgical celebration and the Roman Missal, is to be placed on the altar at Holy Mass. The custom of placing candlesticks and candles on the altar only started in the sixteenth century. Even relics of saints are forbidden to be placed on the altar during solemn Benediction. The high altar, especially if it also has the Tabernacle, is the most sacred of all sacred places in a Catholic church. Even flower arrangements are not permitted ON the altar: “The arrangement of flowers should always be modest, and placed around the altar rather than on top of it” (GIRM #305)
Outside of Mass, if the Pope placed profane objects on the altar, it would be a liturgical or rubrical matter, not a canonical one. Like his annual washing of the feet of women during the Maundy Thursday ritual.

Catholics are aware that gifts and offerings of the people are placed at the foot of the altar and not ON it.
In the light of all of the above, it is not surprising that Traditional Catholics are greatly disturbed by the placing by Pope Francis of a beach ball and a sports jersey next to the Holy of Holies, the Tabernacle.
