Errors in Divine Retreat Centre, Muringoor – 05 – B

A rebuttal of Fr. Augustine Vallooran’s statements

1. The spirituality of the Divine Retreat Centre [DRC] is “charismatic”. One gets the impression that the DRC’s “charismatics”, both preaching teams as well as regular devotees, believe that they are “superior” to other Catholics.

Since my antecedents are not known to many who visit our web site, I proudly affirm that my spirituality is charismatic.

I must add that one of my spiritual directors, a holy and orthodox French Benedictine priest, actually finds it impossible to reconcile my “conservative” ministry with my being “charismatic”. To him it’s an oxymoron. To me, it seems a natural thing.

I have attended literally dozens of retreats and special events including a Bible College and a training programme in Counselling at the DRC between 1995 and 2000. I still do, as in the past, recommend to others these retreats for the reason that the preaching of the Word of God at the DRC has led to the transformation of many lives.

However, it is generally accepted that the contents of the retreat programmes have not evolved much since their inception over two decades ago and the retreats have continued to be by and large what can only be termed as an “initiation” into the Faith. This has resulted in little growth in the spiritual lives of most regular retreatants for whom the Centre becomes a place of pilgrimage and recourse when in need. Many, lacking “solid food” which they now pursue, end up as Pentecostals.

2a. It has been my observation for a very long time that the Divine Retreat Centre, Muringoor, has been the propagator of errors and abuses, including in the liturgy of the Mass, something that, as an apologist, I now find impossible to ignore.

I admit adhering to and participating in most if not all of them at one time or another for several reasons, the chief among them being ignorance; moreover, no one objected to them and almost every charismatic priest, religious and lay leader practised them. However, circumstances — and the personal counsel of some good CCR leaders who would like to see these abuses and errors stopped — make it imperative that they be now exposed. Some teachings at the DRC are not Catholic.

2b. It has been my experience — when I have pointed out these errors and abuses from time to time — that most die-hard devotees of the Divine Retreat Centre are not very receptive to fraternal correction of any sort, or even discussion of the possibility of the Centre being in error. Their responses have ranged from indulgence to hostility. My pointing out that I am only appealing to the teaching of the Church has not saved me from being labeled “anti-Divine Retreat Centre”.

The DRC has become a holy cow for many both within and without the institution and any criticism is viewed as bordering on the sacrilegious. I can truthfully state that this attitude goes right up to the top of the administration. In case my statements appear outrageous, let the reader be assured that, in the course of this series,
I will provide the necessary evidence
to support them.

3. The focus of the first article in the series was on DRC‘s Enneagrams proponent, Sri Lankan preacher Lalith Perera; see DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-01,

The Enneagram is a New Age, occult personality-typing system. See ENNEAGRAMS SUMMARY
for more information on Enneagrams.

Despite the evidence provided to its Director, Fr Augustine Vallooran VC and letters of protest sent to him by several Catholics, DRC continues to invite occult-tainted Lalith Perera to minister at the Centre every year sine our report in 2006.

4. The immediate reason for this series on the Divine Retreat Centre, Muringoor, was the refusal of priests at the Centre to engage in civil correspondence with us in regard to our genuine concern about their promotion of a controversial mystic, see our September 2012 report MAUREEN SWEENEY-HOLY LOVE MINISTRIES This resulted in the report DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-02,

If that attitude was an isolated one, there would have been no necessity for this series. Unfortunately, it was a repeat of the 2006 enneagram preacher DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-01 issue. These first two reports of the series do indeed confirm that the Divine Retreat Centre indeed does not take kindly to fraternal correction or attempt to correct serious error. More evidence of that will be provided.

The Vincentian Fathers have either never replied to my letters drawing their attention to errors that are propagated at their retreat centres and in the Indian church at large, or if they ever did, as in the cases of the Enneagram proponent Lalith Perera [DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-01] and the controversial mystic Maureen Sweeney‘s devotions [DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-02], the letters are evasive or harsh.

5. In closing DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-02, I wrote, “Apparently, the Divine Retreat Centre has made a habit of promoting false mystics, one such being a Greek Orthodox woman, Vassula Ryden whose messages have been condemned by Rome as dangerous” and to be shunned by Catholics.

That was the subject of the next report, DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-03

6. The fourth report in the series is on the use of Hindu and superstitious marks on forehead and face by the Centre’s Catholic devotees and retreatants. See DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-04

7. The fifth report concerns the top echelons of the DRC‘s Vincentian administration’s dalliance with yoga.

8. The present report
DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-05-B is a continuation of the above. I had written to the DRC-Muringoor priests, received a response and wrote a rebuttal:

Dear Michael

1. I do hope that you are open to the truth.

2. I clearly told you in my email that Divine is not promoting the rosary to the unborm [sic] and Divine has never promoted Maureen Sweeny’s [sic] Holy Love Ministry.

3a and 3b. Vassula Ryden never comes to Divine and I do not understand what you mean by “bindi”.

4. I do not understand why you harass me and other about the “errors” of Divine.

I pray for you that you may be spared by God for this false propoganda [sic] that you are making about Divine Retreat Centre.

In Christ+

Fr. Augustine Vallooran V.C.

Sent: Thursday, June 13, 2013 3:40 PM Subject: Re: DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS

Dear Fr. Augustine,

This is my response to your letter for which I thank you.

I have numbered the different issues in your letter of June 6 to which I am responding.

1. Of course, I am open to the truth, Father. My ministry is all about that. It writes the truth and it writes about the truth. It exposes lies, and uncorrected and unacknowledged error. I do this for the Church, to create awareness among those who do not know what the real truth is. In this ministry, there is no temporal reward of power, platform or pelf that most ministries experience.

I do this against a divine calling that I received when I was searching for the Truth in May 1982 as a lapsed Catholic. One of the messages that I received said that my ministry would reach “tens of thousands”. At that time, it was a most ridiculous prophecy.

On March 25, 1995, the Lord gave me Isaiah 30:8 to confirm my writing ministry. This happened before the Blessed Sacrament.

May I remind you that you were only the fourth or fifth in a succession of a dozen eminent priests over the decades, who, when I was an unknown entity making a series of 6 retreats in DRC in 1995 to discern my ministry future, prayed for me and gave me Jeremiah 1: 4, 5, {confirming as all the others did that I have been called to ministry in the Church.}

This was at my third week-long retreat in July 1995. The Scripture that you gave me was unsolicited and unexpected.

You may not remember, but I broke down with the emotion and wept in your room.

A couple of years later, you personally invited me to come to DRC and do counseling on Thursdays. You extended that invitation on not one but three different occasions. It is only at the third invitation from you that I acquiesced.

You also will recall that I did not last long at DRC. I saw and experienced things that were sacrilegiously occurring on holy ground.

I will write about them in detail in one of my future reports including the public [priest’s dining hall] incident of February 23, 2000. Advocate A.M. Mathew, one of your preachers who was occupying room number 112, will corroborate it. So also could have the late Fr. Rufus Pereira, and so will Erika Gibello of the International Associations of Exorcists and Deliverance who was with him, preacher Fritz Mascarenhas, preacher Vinay Kamath, now a priest of Bombay archdiocese, and several others whom I could name.

Those who are open to the truth — and they are many — stand by me in this unique prophetic ministry.

Even those who fear and hate my ministry are certain of its integrity. They know for sure that I never lie, or exaggerate, and that I make my reports after thorough research, meticulous documentation and corroboration with others wherever possible.

They also know that I make these reports after weeks, months, or as in the case of DRC, years of patient correspondence with the authorities concerned without eliciting any proper response or acknowledgement/correction of error.

There is the incident that occurred in my room on February 16, 2000 when one of the DRC counselors, Paul, room number 107, conducted a public pranic healing session. It was witnessed by five others who have signed a statement that I possess and have published in hardcopy, but so far not on the Internet.

I have approached you with my detailed researched reports against pranic healing and reiki asking your help in disseminating them especially among the counselors, but you dismissed me from your presence.

When Advocate Mathew and Fritz Mascarenhas, after an intense meeting with me in the former’s room, came out to the assembly and condemned yoga, Zen, reiki, pranic healing and other New Age in their separate talks, you summoned at least one of them, Fritz, and ensured that he would never again broach the issue at DRC. Who has stifled the truth all along, me or you?

You might recall the six-page letter titled “Letter sent to fake doctor Ganesh Iyer”. It is dated May 31, 1999.

Signed by one S. Santhanaraj, addressed to Ganesh Iyer, it was copied to several leading individuals of DRC and the Indian government, and also five lesser DRC preachers and to all the language sections in DRC. You are at serial no. 2 on the list of copied individuals. At no. 9 and no. 14, we find copies marked to “Superintendent of Police, Chalakudy” and “Commissioner of Police, Chennai”, respectively.

A copy of this letter was given to me by no. 10 on the list, the late Fr. Solomonraj, SJ, who was at that time my spiritual director.

I in turn gave a copy of it to your worship leaders Glen and Teresa La’ Rive along with a ‘word of knowledge ‘that I received about DRC, and which I requested them to urgently convey to you in the light of its seriousness. They are good people — there were/are a few of them at DRC — and I am sure that they must have done my bidding.

The very same Glen and Teresa gave me what was virtually the first tithe that I ever received, the then princely sum of Rs 100, and that was the day after the February 23, 2000, incident. They did it to comfort me after my public ill-treatment at your hands, and to express confidence in my prophetic ministry.

[Incidentally, when I was doing the first Counselors’ Training Programme at DRC, either during or immediately after “Pentecost Blaze”, May 29-31 1998, the animator of the course who did not even know my name, privately singled me out of all the participants who must have numbered several dozen, and invited me to join him over tea in the priests’/preachers’ dining hall, where he informed me that the Lord had directed him to give me an offering of money. I politely declined the offer. It was after that that the priest enquired about who I was and what I do. The name of that priest is Fr. John Parokaren, CMI, then living at the Carmelite house in Chalakudy. He went on to preach for several years at Divine during which time we corresponded.

I also received letters from simple people who ministered at Divine, some of who suffered and some of who felt cheated. I have them all. The names of the writers are [the late] Lansbury Titus, [the late] Eric Pinheiro, Sr., Aravindaksha Menon, Swapna Abraham, etc. Wouldn’t you like to know the contents of their letters to me? So would others.

But even good people can become complacent, compromised and flow with the tide. Who doesn’t want a safe and popular ministry?

I heard a year or so ago that Glen criticised my ministry to others.

I am doing nothing different than what I have been doing since you gave me the ‘word of knowledge’, Jeremiah 1: 4,5 in 1995

But what they don’t like is my now exposing the errors of their own retreat centre.

If you are honest and truthful, Father, please share this letter with them. Their email box is always full and showing “over quota”.

Tell them that compromise and silence is complicity.

Glen and Teresa are aware that I was inclined to depose at the High Court in Kochi in the case filed against DRC to testify that some of the allegations leveled against DRC were true. A senior leader of the National Service Team of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal interceded with me on behalf of DRC and said that if I testified against DRC at that juncture, it would be the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back, the camel being DRC. I visited Glen’s home twice or thrice on that fateful day and met his mother. Glen and Teresa were on duty in DRC. I had wanted to unburden myself with/to Glen and Teresa who I loved and trusted. By the plan of God they were not at home. Glen’s mother asked me not to go ahead with my intention. I prayed about it and felt the Lord confirming that it was not what he wanted me to do. People were and are being saved at DRC, despite the presence of power-hungry and unscrupulous elements. I returned home to Chennai.

But, dear Father, the Lord still indicates that I must write!

Maybe the subject line of my series should be altered to read “FR. AUGUSTINE VALLOORAN’s ERRORS”, instead of “DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS” because you are personally involved in many, and because you have promoted yourself to be synonymous with DRC.

I might include here that people ask as to why the directors, even founders of different religious congregations of other retreat centres — including the Vincentian priests of your Order — are transferred and humbly obey their transfer orders, but you are there at the helm of DRC for the last twenty years at least.

You must have observed by now that I keep meticulous records, and this will continue to be evident in the DRC ERRORS series that is underway. As I have maintained repeatedly, the reason remains the same as always: I have spoken to you and I have written to you and a number of priests and senior leaders of DRC. A few acknowledged my communications. But the old errors remain and new ones have emerged. If you had initiated a Christian response to my approach, things might be different today.

In every incident of spiritual error that I report, it is always the other party that is never open to the truth. Not me.

To end this point, I admit that I have made errors over the last 15 years of my writing, exactly 10 of which are on the Internet.

But these errors have hardly exceeded four or five. That is infinitesimal considering that I write and publish thousands of pages a year on more different and varied topics than all of India’s Catholic ministries combined. And, I must add that in every single case where it has been pointed out to me that I was wrong, I have made the correction without any excuse or argument and tendered an apology to all concerned.

2. I categorically deny having received any email from you in the matter of Maureen Sweeney’s Holy Love Ministry.

Fr. Michael Payyapilly VC did, and I found his letter to be in denial, harsh and evasive. I responded but he did not get back to me.

I had written to you as well as Fr. Michael on January 06, 2013. If you had replied, it would have been included in the report that is on my web site.

While you deny promoting that alleged mystic and her rosary, there is a blog coming from Mumbai, see page 2 of my report

that was written on September 7, 2012 by a retreatant [Inner Healing retreat] who heard it preached about by a priest, became enamoured of it, bought two rosaries from one of the stalls at the Divine Retreat Centre and promotes the devotion on her blog.

3a. You write, “Vassula Ryden never comes to Divine”. That is true.

But you were careful not to say, “Vassula Ryden has never
come to Divine”.

I have recorded the following on page 2, “It must have been in 1997 that Fr. Mathew Naickomparambil VC from Potta, the founder of the Divine group of institutions went to Switzerland, met Vassula Ryden and invited her to India, as informed to me orally by Muringoor director Fr. Augustine Vallooran VC, after which she performed at Muringoor [on January 22, 1998]“. At that point in time, I was myself promoting Vassula.

At a retreat being given by you in Chennai prior to her visit to India, probably in Vepery parish, you had summoned me to your first floor room on learning that I was present there, and you requested me to join your group during its return to DRC after the retreat’s conclusion. I declined giving you two reasons: the first was that I was scheduled to attend the second of three sessions at the Father Rebello School of Evangelization in Mangalore under Fr. Francis Rebello SJ and Fr James Manjackal MSFS, and the second was that I had already reserved my rail tickets to go to Kochi and Goa to attend the programmes of Vassula Ryden. You then informed me that she was coming to India at the invitation of DRC as in the passage cited above.

Referring to Vassula’s web site, pages 2 and 3 of my report say,

Vassula Ryden visited DRC, Muringoor once again on
November 24, 1999
and delivered her false messages.

The report also says, “In 2002, DRC, Muringoor was a major destination for Vassula Ryden. She had half a dozen engagements there for five days, between February 14 and February 18, addressing crowds at the English language as well as the Malayalam language sections of the Retreat Centre as well as their Bible Colleges, a convention at their nearby Potta ashram and also gave an interview for two Catholic magazines.”

On December 1, 1999, she ministered at Tabor Divine Retreat Ashram, Kalyan, Mumbai, and again on May 27, 2002.

Vassula Ryden‘s first visit to the
Divine Retreat Centre, Faridabad was in 2006.” Both are Vincentian institutions.

Again, “Vassula Ryden‘s trip to India was scheduled to commence with a December 1, 2012
“talk at the night vigil at the
Divine Retreat Centre, Faridabad.” […] Her scheduled December 1, 2012 visit here was cancelled at the instance of the Archbishop of Faridabad, following an alert from this ministry.” […]

I ended my report thus, “The Vincentian Fathers have either never replied to my letters drawing their attention to errors that are propagated at their retreat centres, or if they ever did, as in the cases of the Enneagram proponent Lalith Perera [DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-01] and the controversial mystic Maureen Sweeney‘s devotions [DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-02], the letters are evasive or harsh.

I have shown that you are careful in your choice of words, trying to convey a half-truth to the others to whom the letter is copied.

The truth by your own testimony to me and the True Life in God web site is that Vassula made her entry into India at the behest and under the auspices of DRC, visited DRC and promoted her messages and books there on her later trips to India, and was even to give a show very recently at your Faridabad retreat centre till I took up the matter with the local archbishop and he stopped it.

3b. You write, “I do not understand what you mean by “bindi”.”

In my January 6 letter to you, I gave you the title and link of my report

To understand why these forehead and facial marks must not be sported by Christians, see my reports

If you had opened and read DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE ERRORS-04, you would not have needed to ask me the question.

4. In my point no. 1, above, I have responded to point no. 4 of your letter.

I am not harassing either DRC or any individual or institution anywhere. I am engaged in a prophetic ministry which was confirmed by you in July 1995.

I am not conducting false propaganda. My reports are well documented.

Thank you and God bless you and DRC,

Michael Prabhu

Note that Fr. Augustine Vallooran has carefully avoided answering the charge that I made that he and DRC endorse the use of yoga — as well as avoiding the older Lalith Perera/Enneagrams issue –Michael
