The critical web site on Vassula Ryden is back online!
Here is very good news for some; very bad news for others!
About one month ago, the Italian association GRIS [Group of Research and Social-Religious Information] has reopened the defunct www.infovassula.ch website under the URL www.pseudomystica.info.
To recall, on December 17, 2012, I published a report titled VASSULA RYDEN-EXCOMMUNICATED OR NOT-A LAW SUIT [http://ephesians-511.net/docs/VASSULA_RYDEN-EXCOMMUNICATED_OR_NOT-A_LAW_SUIT.doc].
In it, I chronicled how alleged mystic Mrs. Vassula Ryden, having trade-marked [something unprecedented] the name “Vassula” as well as “True Life in God”, sued Maria Laura Pio, the owner of www.infovassula.ch — which was a Vassula-critical site — and forced its closure.
That occurrence took place around the middle of the year 2012.
Having done that, Vassula Ryden issued a communication which contained misrepresentations of the truth [lies] which I exposed.
But truth always prevails.
All of the critical information that Vassula Ryden was anxious to hide from public scrutiny, and much more, was published in a series of six reports and fifty-four articles at this ministry’s web site between November 25, 2012 and January 14, 2013. This was necessitated by Vassula Ryden’s December 2012 visit to India with the support of a Cardinal, and a couple of Archbishops and Bishops who had compromised their integrity by being her repeat guests on all-expenses-paid “pilgrimages” organised by “True Life in God” [TLIG].

Now, critical information on Mrs. Ryden is available at an even more authoritative site than mine!
GRIS is an association recognized by the Italian Bishops’ Conference and deals with religious phenomena.
The contents of the web site are therefore approved by the Italian Bishops’ Conference.
Its National President is Fr. François-Marie Dermine, O.P. The new website www.pseudomystica.info is administered by GRIS, who is now the legal owner of all the contents of the earlier www.infovassula.ch.
François-Marie Dermine, a Dominican priest of Canadian origin, is a professor of moral theology at FTER (the Faculty of Theology of Emilia-Romagna, Bologna, Italy), a member of the executive council of GRIS
(Group of Research and Social-Religious Information), consultant to the Italian Bishops’ Conference for questions on alternative religions, co-director of the review Religioni e Sette nel mondo [Religions and Sects in the World], and official exorcist for his own diocese. He is author of numerous articles on alternative religions and of the following publications, of particular importance for the subject of the present investigation: Vassula Ryden – Indagine critica [Vassula Ryden – A Critical Examination] (Elle di Ci, 1995) and Mistici, veggenti e medium – Esperienze dell’aldilà a confronto [Mystics, Visionaries and Mediums – Comparison of after-life experiences] (Libreria editrice vaticana, 2002). He is co-author of L’estasi [Ecstasies] (Libreria editrice vaticana, 2003).

What do false mystics do, besides peddle spiritual messages and collect money from naive followers? They sue people who try to expose them.
Last March the Patriarchate of Constantinople warned against1 Vassula Ryden’s claims of presenting messages from Jesus. It was an impressive statement from her own church (English translation here)2, which should help to diminish the bad influence of this long-exposed phony3, especially when it is added to the warnings from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1995, 1996, and 20074, 5 and 6.
In March 2011 the critical web site infovassula.ch, based in Switzerland, wrote, apparently incorrectly, that the document was a formal excommunication of Ryden, and in November 2011 Vassula’s organization sued the site author7, Maria Laura Pio. A hearing about some issues was held on January 6.
The impression of an excommunication is understandable, since the Patriarchate’s document stated:
we call upon the proponents of these unacceptable innovations and the supporters who maintain them, who henceforth are not admitted to ecclesiastical communion, not only to not be involved in the pastoral work of the local Holy Metropolis, but also to not preach their novel teachings, to prevent the appropriate sanctions under the Holy Canons.
Of course we are dealing with translations, so ambiguities are possible. It sounds at least as if the followers of Vassula are to be denied Holy Communion until they desist.
I wish Ms. Pio all the best in dealing with this legal harassment from the Vassula camp.

Free speech, part II

Some months ago the non-Catholic false mystic Vassula Ryden sued1 Swiss resident Maria Laura Pio, in a court in Belgium, demanding to take down Mrs. Pio’s web site of critical articles, infovassula.ch. The choice of Belgium as a venue was puzzling, since both Pio and Ryden are residents of Switzerland. Maybe some foolish lawyer in Belgium is a follower of Mrs. Ryden and volunteered to do the dirty work at no charge, thinking that he’s serving God by persecuting Mrs. Pio.
When the case came to a hearing, the court in Belgium promptly dismissed it on procedural grounds, so that went nowhere.
Well, Mrs. Ryden has found another foolish lawyer to do her dirty work, and this time she may get her way. A lawyer in Cardiff, Wales, has threatened to sue Mrs. Pio, claiming that the domain name of her web site infringes on Mrs. Ryden’s trademarks. Mrs. Pio has decided not to spend any more time defending herself from such vexatious litigation and has announced2 (here’s a copy3) that she’s closing the site this month.
A commenter on the previous blog post observes4:

The threats are spurious – and I’ve done some more research on the people behind this. The solicitor who is threatening to sue for legal fees and loss of TLIG(TM) earnings, Anthony Jeremy, is a specialist in CANON law and a fully paid up member of the cult, having posted at length, coincidentally, about the Congregation’s ban on the use of church premises and being mentioned by someone else in a ‘testimony’.
Vassula(TM) is a registered trademark, as is TLIG(TM), which is curious. The attack has no basis, clearly Pio’s site is not trading as TLIG, is not selling a bogus product, in fact is not selling anything and doesn’t even carry advertising! It clearly falls under ‘fair use’, otherwise it would be impossible to ever mention Vassula(TM) or TLIG(TM). Also note that nowhere on the TLIG(TM) site does it mention that these are registered trademarks and only refers to copyright on the message content. I wonder why?
Also note that TLIG(TM) is not mentioned in full, no corporate address or full details of the company. TLIG(TM) seems not registered in the UK as a trading entity. Looking at the Foundation, we find that this is registered in Switzerland. It has one office and one employee. The president, Jan Kooger Howard, has currently 19 separate companies running from front offices around Geneva – none has more than 6 registered employees – his main interest seems to be an oil brokerage for Nigerian oil, Sahara Energy Services. And no, that does not appear to be a trademark!
The trademarks are owned by the VP, another Swiss big businessman, Jacques Gay, one of the Freres Gay and the owner of a few watch clasp patents.
I’ll take your word as to the lawyer’s identity, since I don’t know it for myself. His claims seem spurious to me too: Mrs. Pio isn’t engaged in trade, so it seems strange to claim that she’s violating a trademark. And the claim that Vassula’s followers can’t tell a critical website from a supportive one is really an insult to them.
How a lawyer can make such implausible assertions without turning purple from embarrassment is beyond me, but some people have a natural skill for it.

I received yesterday (May 2, 2012) the following letter from UK solicitors representing Vassula Ryden and the Foundation for True Life in God, demanding that I turn over to them the domain name Infovassula,
because “Vassula” and “True Life in God” are registered international trademarks and I cannot use those words in my domain name. They state that I am using the domain name infovassula.ch as an instrument of fraud, because it contains negative information regarding Vassula. They claim they have been damaged because some of their followers didn’t understand (!) that it is a critical website and not an official website of Mrs Ryden’s. They also accuse me of trying to pass myself as a member of Vassula’s organization! I’m not even going to comment the letter, just read it below.
Unfortunately, I can take no more of this. So,
I am going to close the website at the end of May and unfortunately, since I do not have the means financially nor mentally to face another lawsuit (see tliglawsuit.htm), no matter how ridiculous it is, I am constrained to hand over the domain name to Vassula
in June 2012. Infovassula will then cease to be a critical website and will join the cohort of pro-Vassula websites that proliferate in the Internet.

Here’s a little good news for readers who are concerned about the case of non-Catholic false mystic Vassula Ryden.
You may recall that Mrs. Ryden won a small victory in 2012 by shutting down the leading web site with critical information about her writings.
Her campaign of harassment by means of lawsuits1 got the site owner to close the web site.
But in an example of the
Streisand Effect2, the suit brought lots of attention to Mrs. Ryden and her dirty method of dealing with sincere religious critique: among Orthodox Christians

and among sect-watchers
here4, and particularly
here on the world’s leading English-language Catholic news site5. And there’s information
here in Spanish6; and
here in French7
and here in German8.
And various people took action to make sure that the informative material on that web site would not disappear. For instance, Catholic Culture picked up
this analysis of the case by a prominent Dominican theologian9, Fr. François Dermine, O.P.
Now the theologian himself has stepped up by putting the whole website back on line, at the new domain www.pseudomystica.info. He’s the president of an Italian organization studying religious sects10, and they’re willing and able to defend their freedom of speech from legal harassment by sect leaders.

This website is a continuation of the previously known infovassula.ch website. The dominion name infovassula.ch had to be transferred in June 2012 by the owner María Laura Pio to the Foundation for TLIG (True Life in God), the organization which ensures the promotion and defence of Vassula Rydén’s messages. Mrs Pio declared herself unable “financially as well as psychologically” to continue the fight against TLIG’s legal harassment.
It is indeed well-known that many claimed seers are used to entrusting the defence of their cause to solicitors rather than to God…
The GRIS (Gruppo di Ricerca e Informazione Socio-religiosa) has asked and obtained from Mrs Pio the ownership of all the contents published in the infovassula.ch website, which have been significantly renamed www.pseudomystica.info.
The new website is well within GRIS’ objectives. Its Articles of association were approved in 1990 by the Italian Bishops’ Conference and the association is present in more than 40 Italian dioceses through a representative named by the GRIS and approved by the local bishop. Since 1987 our association promotes the research, study and discernment of various religious phenomenologies, and provides spiritual, legal or psychological assistance to those who find themselves involved in particular situations or groups.
The scope of the current initiative is to avoid the disappearance of a very valid critical instrument as well as to avoid the further fulfilment of the principle that ‘might makes right’; but most of all it wants to ensure that the new website has all the guarantees, including legal ones, needed not only for its survival, but also for a more calm, free and resolute continuation of its activities.
